With the annual Caribbean Day Parade, which takes place every Labor Day in Crown Heights, canceled this year due to COVID 19, many residents are wondering what, if anything, will be taking place in Crown Heights.
The annual parade down Eastern Parkway brings millions to the Crown Heights neighborhood, and normally requires the area’s streets being closed to traffic for the entire day.
This year, with the parade canceled, there will be no street closures in the neighborhood, Chanina Sperlin, the CHJCC Director of Intergovernmental Affairs told COLlive.
Boys schools Oholei Torah and Lubavitcher Yeshiva are scheduled to have regular classes on Sunday and Monday.
“I have spoken with NYPD Chief of Community Affairs Jeffrey Maddrey, who informed me that all streets will remain open to traffic,” Sperlin said.
Sperlin also said that many residents have been concerned with safety in the neighborhood, given the recent uptick in crime in New York City and the recent protests.
“Chief Maddrey has stated that there will be 700 extra police officers stationed in the area of the 71st Precinct, for a total of close to 800 NYPD officers who will patrol the area,” Sperlin said.
“In addition, hundreds of additional officers will be patrolling the surrounding areas,” he said.
Police say that residents should be cautious throughout the entire weekend, during which the J’ouvert celebrations are held, which have in the past resulted in some violence in the neighborhood among the revelers.
“Even though there will be no official parade, and we don’t expect anything to happen, all residents should remain cautious,” Sperlin said.
No matter how hard they try something will happen
Police officers won’t stop violence and shootings from happening no matter how hard they try
Schools should not open ,children walk in all directions and who knows what can happen
Especially now things will be worse than usual
Stay home on Monday and stay safe
Don’t let your kids walk around it’s NOT safe
Does BLM approve?!
Come Sunday they will shout their opinion from the rooftops, from every corner of Crown Heights….terrifying
And it will happen
There should be a sign on each & every street corner and middle of blocks every single block coasting up and down Eastern Parkway in big letters. Something like in higher case letters “NO PRADE 2020. AS WE DON’T HAVE PERMITS FOR 2020” nothing more & nothing less. It may work. Just my thought.
Really? Those that can read won’t bother to follow the law. With no bail and calls to defund the police, the police aren’t likely to do anything, unfortunately.
Protests don’t require permits anymore.
BLACK LIVES MATTER The African American Community in NYC have been discriminated against for about 70 Years since the start of The Jouvert / West Indian Day Parade / Labor Day Parade Carnival Events. Every Chosheve Respectful Parade, And Every Parade that matters are all located with Kavod on 5th Avenue in the Center of Manhattan NYC. This includes the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, The Israeli Day Parade, The Puerto Rican Day Parade, The Pride Parade, The Patricks Day Parade & many many more Annual Parades Yearly. Why is the African American Community being Discriminated against??? Why is the NYC City Council… Read more »
Criminals are entitled to due process and a police officer who takes the law into his own hands should individually go through due process.
All law abiding Americans are entitled to walk freely through the streets of their country without fear for themselves or their children. ‘Protesters’ looting, shooting and generally acting like animals will definitely NOT change anyone’s mind about that.
Great thought – except the African Americans would most likely prefer not to travel, and the majority probably live closer to CH.
They do not live here! Most of the participants travel to participate.
Crime in CH & NYC is rising in every category daily, The streets are not safe, Each day has more and more shootings in NYC & in Brooklyn, There are 2 types of Neighborhoods throughout NYC. One type (which is the majority) has the majority of their neighborhood’s residents want to Defund & even Abolish the NYPD, They have No respect for law & order, They want lawlessness & crime, They have No respect for the brave NYPD that are risking their own lives to try to keep them safe & they have No respect for Law Abiding Citizens. Too bad the parade can’t be cancelled forever.
Or better yet,……. have it in the Caribbean!
BH, Everyone should check their Mezuzahs & Teffilin to make sure it is good and Kosher, Chodesh Elul is a perfect time, great for protection. As well All Yiddishe Stores, Businesses & Shuls that are on Street Level entrance anywhere in CH that does not have should Put & Install Immediately Full Store Gates on ALL Glass Windows/Doors, If all the Stores in Manhattan would of had store gates instead of their thick fancy shmancy glass that after enough hitting on it all broke then the Riots/Looting in Manhattan on June 1st 2020 would of been much much less destructive,… Read more »
Suggestion, Besides for obviously nobody should be walking outside unless its really something of extreme importance from Sunday Late Afternoon till Tuesday Morning for their own safety, As well anyone and everyone that have Cars & Vehicles on the Street, If you are somehow able to get your vehicle squeezed in by your friends, Garage/Backyard/Behind a Gate or Even Driveway, Basically anywhere but the street etc it may be a good idea, Because obviously we have no idea what to expect and lets IYH hope for the best, but a parked car on the street cant defend itself from people… Read more »
Talk show call in or interview on news said they are taking to the streets. Should Yeshivas really be open? Virtual on -line Yeshiva Monday is advised.
Angrily, They say that they are “taking it to the streets!”
Ask elected officials and others to put pressure on the mayor to allow the parade. Get lots of media attention expressing that the residents of Crown Heights are on the side of their Caribbean neigjhbors and request the parade. UNITY IN THE NEIGJBORHOOD! Otherwise Simchas Bas Hashuava won’t be allowed on Kingston this year either, unless maybe they also help us overcome the mayor’s decisions. It must be The Same unity because one cannot take place if not the other. Kingston can’t be closed either then PEACE AND UNITY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD ABOVE ALL!
We show respect to parade members by cancellation of the Parade.
Unlike the 5th ave. type of parades, the participants who’s parade were canceled shoot each other each and every year without fail.
Canceling the Parade helps save lives of those who mater, of those who shoot each other each and every year, without fail.
It’s because their lives mater, that we show them respect and caring to cancel the parade for their own protection, to protect them from themselves
