Kosher groceries are constantly adding to their healthier foods selection with some stores reporting nearly a fourth of all their items to be gluten free, natural or organic.
Probiotics is also making its presence known including in the refrigerated section where Norman’s Yogurt is featuring a line of the healthy fare.
But nowhere is the transition to healthier foods seen more clearly than in the snack aisle where low-calorie, sugar-free and gluten-free items are now fillings shelves that have become a major profit center for the kosher stores.
According to experts, snack foods in general are outpacing the growth of all other categories with expectations that it will grow by nearly 6% each year until 2020 with expected sales of over $25 billion.
The experts noted that snack foods, once buried as end caps or at the end of long aisles, now have a major aisle of their own. This is also true in kosher supermarkets.
Some stores even strategically place plastic bags in the aisles to help shoppers fill the bags in much the same way as they would in the produce aisle. Some estimates put the national kosher snack category at over $50 million.

Snack bars are marketed as fast, healthy food when you’re on the run, so Consumer Reports labs checked out 28 of the top sellers. They discovered that some are not much better than a candy bar and they have a caution about high-protein bars.
Meal mart sells nitrate free hot dogs. They can be found in the freezer section of your store carries them.
Yes they do make nitrate-free hot dogs.
I know romanian kosher in chicago carries them.
there are recipes for mock hot dogs made from beans. you can google it.
basically, you take well cooked beans, a tiny bit of smoke flavor sauce, garlic, cilantro and herbs, and some bread crumbs or oat flour, mix and form into “hot dogs” and bake or fry. make sure the batter is firm enough to form. or look up a recipe. b’teyavone
OY its way past time for it.
I saw a group of kids who were brought to see Crown Heights, and one (teen) commented to the friends “they sell so much junk food here”.
Easier said than done? Can you post some recipes. Plus, what are your tips on obtaining organic produce in this neighborhood? Who carries it and where is most affordable?
Any ideas for nitrate free hot dogs or cold cuts?? My children love them and I wish I had a substitute to give them. I’ve heard that kosher soy hot dogs exist and are comparable to the real thing but I just haven’t been able to find them! Any leads would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
When I stopped eating GMOs, I stopped getting migraines.
To #9, vitacost.com has a ton of organic, kosher food. Free shipping over $50, and no state tax. So in your pajamas! Every few weeks they have 15-20% of sales. I load up my cart, and when I get a sale email, viola, shopping done. Most of their prices are competitive, but not all. You have to know your prices. Good luck in your search for organic, kosher food!
Interesting I’ve had the same reactions and took years till I realized with help of health professionals what it was from
Gluten free is for people that can’t have gluten, it’s not healthier!
Same junk!
Most ‘healthy bars’ are not healthy! way more sugar than it should have!.
I guess it’s better than closing and MSG but no, it’s delusional to think so!
As far as gluten-free products are concerned, it’s not that simple. Some people know they have celiac disease and avoid products with gluten. Other do not know they have celiac disease but have intermittent symptoms, and until it is diagnosed correctly, live for years with symptoms that could be avoided. Others are not sensitive to gluten.
So, there are breads and other products that can be made gluten-free. Some grains do not have gluten, therefore some flours do not have gluten. And or course, ergo, gluten-free baked goods.
We learn as we develop new or deeper knowledge, obviously.
Shall we think for a moment….At least they are trying to overcome the use of horrible chemicals, additives, msg, artificial colors, etc. Before I was aware of these things, I didn’t know why I would get headaches, tongue-swelling, and difficulty breathing , all from monosodium glutamate (msg). Sometimes it was a minimal reaction, and other times it was significant. It can be in store-prepared food in the form of “spices”, tenderizer, hydrolyzed protein. It can be in flavored chips, canned soups, and more. You might be sensitive to it and not realize it, because the reactions vary and not everyone… Read more »
Let me just make it clear that any brand/food that claims its healthy and organic are usually non trustable, the fact that it’s processed is already a huge flag, along with all of the unhealthy added ingredients. Start making your own organic, nutritious bars people! Live healthier and don’t give into the false advertising.
The majority of the bread today, is probably not the bread the Torah is talking about
I wish this were true. Sadly, kosher health food and organic products are hard to come by in local kosher stores. Kudos to the Market Place for trying, but I think there just isn’t enough of a demand so the little (and expensive) organic produce that they have is often in a sorry state when I come to purchase. I await the day when demand is higher so local stores can adequately stock up.
Read the ingredients and see how much sugar in differente name are into.
healtier is what you are doing home

ch”v to give off the impression that Gluten Free is ‘healthy’!
Rachmanah L’tzlan… People going Gluten Free are not healthy. Only non-healthy people are Gluten Free!
According to Toirah bread is healthy! Replacing a gluten diet for fake, modified, food is playing with fire.
a lot of these are high in sugar, watermelon right now is best and then snack on nuts no salt, no added sugar you can still snack on them but without the sugar, chololate isn’t good for people who need to stay off yeast
Not all bars in video are kosher !!
(And many bars are dairy – NOT CHOLOV YISROEL )
BS”D Yes,gluten free candy bars, eat all you want and not only not gain weight but lose it ha ha
This was a bit of an eye opener for me. With all the daily pressures I frequently don’t eat right.
this is comical.
“fourth of all items sold at Kosher groceries across the country are gluten free, natural or organic.”
that’s a load of baloney.
