New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand became the latest Democrat to exit the 2020 presidential primary, announcing that she is abandoning her campaign for the White House, Fox News reports.
Gillibrand failed to meet the fundraising and polling thresholds for September’s Democratic debate in Houston, it was reported.
“After more than eight incredible months, I’m ending my presidential campaign,” Gillibrand said in a video on Twitter. “We wanted to win this race, but it’s important to know when its not your time and to know how you can best serve your commmunity and country.”
Gillibrand is the most-well known Democrat to exit the crowded — but winnowing — field of White House hopefuls, Fox News reported. Others who dropped out are former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, Washington Governor Jay Inslee of and Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton.
Gillibrand, who once has close ties with the Orthodox Jewish communities in New York, has adopted a critical view of Israel during her campaign in an effort to appeal to the progressive and liberal factions of the Democratic party.
In 2017, Gillibrand withdrew her sponsorship of the bipartisan Israel Anti-Boycott Act, citing the criticism of the American Civil Liberties Union that it would infringe upon freedom of speech, jewishvirtuallibrary.org pointed out.
After Israel denied entry to antisemitic and anti-Israel congress members Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, Gillibrand said: “I don’t know why (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu would want to deny members of Congress to come to Israel if they expect us to be that never-ending partner and friend.”
Today, I am ending my campaign for president.
I am so proud of this team and all we’ve accomplished. But I think it’s important to know how you can best serve.
