Zaka emergency response organization is reporting that Aharon Alexander, the 25 year-old Yeshiva student brutally assaulted over Pesach, has regained consciousness.
Following the second Seder on Motzoei Shabbos, Alexander was attacked on the streets of Kiev in what the community believes to be an anti-Semitic hate crime.
He was left in critical condition and was flown to Israel to be hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Tel Aviv Medical Center, after Ukrainian doctors gave a grim prognosis.
Visiting him today was Israel’s Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger, who has visited the Jewish community in Kiev and is friendly with its leaders.
Metzger was accompanied by Yaakov Zilberman, an aide of Ukraine’s Chief Rabbi Moshe Asman and members of Zaka.
They reported that, two weeks after the attack, Alexander is awake and is communicating with people.
He said he doesn’t remember much of the incident. “My head hurts and I don’t remember much,” he began. “I was hit from behind with something heavy. I didn’t see who did it. After that I woke up in shul.”
CCTV footage showed Alexander leaving the Bordsky synagogue on Saturday night. He was found on Sunday night, suffering from serious head injuries, believed to have been caused by glass bottles, Ynetnews reported.
“I want to thank Am Yisroel and the Israeli people for helping me in all that is needed,” Alexander told his visitors.
The Jewish community in Kiev has reportedly alerted authorities to a group of skinheads that have made threats against its members.
