Yom Kipur is around the corner and you know what that means?
Time for the annual protests of the annual chicken swinging ritual known as kapparot.
Opponents, who this year advertised briefly in Times Square, aren’t against the ritual so much as they’re against the chicken killing.
To get their message of peace for poultry out, The Alliance To End Chickens as Kaporos is going to host not one, not two, but THREE two-hour protest/demonstrations in Brooklyn this year.
The Alliance advocates swinging money rather than chickens, quoting Rabbi Shlomo Segal, Rabbi of Beth Shalom of Kings Bay in Brooklyn: “The pain caused to the chickens in the process of performing Kapparot is absolutely unnecessary. Giving money is a more humane method.”
The Alliance’s protests will be held on the following dates:
Tuesday evening Oct 4: Ocean Parkway and Ave. P in Midwood from 6-8pm.
Wednesday evening Oct 5: Pupa Kosher Butcher store at 118 Division Ave (between Bedford & Driggs Avenues) in Williamsburg from 6-8pm.
Thursday evening Oct 6: 792 Eastern Parkway between Kingston & Albany Avenues in Crown Heights from 6-8pm.
#6 “While we watch the protests (and have a collective laugh or 2 at a bunch of people who are fine with abortion but want to save chicken) lets remember that these are the people mostly responsible for Rubashkin sitting in jail”
Um wrong! Rubashkin is responsible for why Rubashkin is in jail. You can argue about the sentence, but don’t blame others for any of his illegal activities.
even broccoli screams when you pull it from the ground.
They are actually trying their shtick in Williamsburgh? Someone there is going to shlug them azoi vi a kappoore, a kappoore, a kappoore!
Kings Bay is a conservative house of worship
If everyone treated their chickens right….and just stopped engaging with the protesters we wouldnt look like such idiots. Truth is, in todays day and age – when there are other options – I dont know why we still have to slaughter chickens on the street. We do look like barbarians and maybe should consider how it appears to the world? Its not like its not ok to do it with # or a fish. Or maybe it should be done more privately out of the city!?!? And Im not talking about sacrificing our yiddishkeit for appearnaces blah blah. its just… Read more »
to number 14: you are wrong! the problems start when the fathers dont watch their kids throwing bread and who knows what else to the fish! and the big fish died too!!! they are abused!
In the old days, in the shtettle, the average yid would take a chicken from his back yard and do kaporos and bring it to the shochet. No mass production. No violently stuffing them into crates. No holding them painfully by the wings, in an effort to save time. In today’s modern society we live mainly in cities where everything is mass produced and time ansd speed is of essence. Mass production of Kaparos in the city is a whole different ball game, Unfortunately, there IS a massive amount of unnecessary cruelty. There IS waht to be upset about. They… Read more »
…….an article in (Time)(Newsweek) last year, how hogs are tortured by the hundreds of thousands in hog farms. No, literally! It’s obvious PETA IS SPONSORED by the HOG FUTURES SYNDICATE to distract from what’s going on. KOL HAPOISEL B’MUMOI POISEL!
Did you ever toss a child up lovingly and he was shocked but then happy? Have you ever tickled a kid and he laughed? Have you seen someone hurt a child without meaning to? I’m going to stop the maternity ward in the hospital because kids cry when they are born! We should have protesters there! At least chicken is tasty.
Lol I miss the protests. I was there last year by Tishrei And I loved haking the protestors a chainik.
Maybe Rabbi Seagull feels his feathered brothers pain.
lol i liked it
It seems that “Rabbi” Segal never did Kaporas in his life! What kind of “pain”?! You just pick up the chicken put it over your head and put it back! That’s it. The same “pain” as picking a spoon and putting it back on the table…
Just like # 5 said…Have a huge sign sayin, “These People are killing babies, yet they defend the chicken” Get out of our sight!!!1
I’ve personally once witnessed on a farm (I went for kapporos) how goyim threw rabbits before they were taken to be killed for treife stores. My children were with me. We were horrified. We all know that goyim have no midda of rachamim. They simply want to make the animals suffer to make themselves feel stronger. THese protesters should go out to the chicken farms and slaughter places of the goyim and then they will see cruelty. It’s because we are Yidden that they are protesting. Nothing more. Actually they are jealous. They’ve got no way to really rid themselves… Read more »
DO THESE PROTESTERS EAT? DO THEY REALIZE HOW PAINFUL IT IS FOR A FRUIT TO BE RIPPED OFF THE TREE AND EVERY BITE IS TORCHEROUS? JUST BECAUSE THEY DON’T HEAR THE POOR FRUIT SCREAMING IN AGONY, DOESN’T MEAN IT IS NOT IN PAIN. HOW ABOUT BREAD. DID THEY EVER SEE HOW THE TRACTORS RIP THE EARTH. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE ENORMOUS PAIN THAT CAUSES THE SILENT SUFFERER. AGAIN JUST BECAUSE WE CANNOT HEAR THEM SCREAM DOES NOT MEAN IT DOESN’T HEATT THEM. SO LAY OFF THOSE OF US WHO HAVE RITUALS AND RESPECT FOR ANIMALS AND FOOD. G-D CREATED MAN… Read more »
Learn to handle chickens with care like a baby kitten! read #7
Why do they pick on kapporos? Do they know how many fish were abused to death at 770 for tashlich?
On East New York Ave. between Kingston and Brooklyn Avenues is a Chinese live chicken wholesale operation, where live chickens are sold, EVERY DAY, Does anyone think these chickens are treated, handled or slaughtered more gently or humanely than by kaporos? Why don’t the PETA people and their ilk move their protests there and to other places like it? The disproportionate focus on a minag Yisroel done once a year speaks volumes.
and so how should the chickens be handled?
Shechting is the most humane way to slaughter chickens obviously and the shoctim are tops – BUT the way the shochtim at kapporos sometimes just THROW, or toss them aside is just not kavodik to the chicken (if you can say that!) – and it is just not neccessary to handle them with such speed, that the shochtim chas v’shalom come across as acting in a crass way.
If they only knew how I cuddle the chickens!! My mother also always cuddled the chickens and talked to them. I have taught my children to do the same. They sit quietly in my arms and when I swing them they give one squawk and then I quickly comfort them again! None of those protesters would ever be so gentle and humane as that. They just are ignorant and want to create a scene!! It is well known that it comes from higher source, this minhag ,and they cannot comprehend such ideas. We know the chickens would prefer to die… Read more »
i agree with # 1 its about time we start treating the chickens with respect. the way they are dumped and left all over the streets is no way to do it.
While we watch the protests (and have a collective laugh or 2 at a bunch of people who are fine with abortion but want to save chicken) lets remember that these are the people mostly responsible for Rubashkin sitting in jail
these people like to punish, they must have borderline personality disorder. how evil they are not even trying to find out how our shechting goes
They disturb the Kapparos and shoal be allowed to protest.
They tried to scare the kids. Something must be done in Boro Park they would do something. Our vaad must step up.
….With a yechi sign for the chickens!
I agree with them every year when i do kapores i am horrified at the way these chickens are treated. although there is nothing wrong with the actual kapores.. the way the chickens are handles are tzar bal hachayim
