Joshua Hofer (Yehoshua ben Avraham), a beloved member of the Long Beach Jewish community, passed away on the 20th of Nissan, Chol Hamoed Pesach, 5785.
He was 54.
Josh grew up in Los Angeles, California, and over the years lived in Minnesota, Las Vegas, and Long Beach, where he spent many meaningful years.
He attended Yeshiva Chanoch Lanaar in Crown Heights and merited to be by the Rebbe on numerous occasions—something that remained a point of pride and connection for him throughout his life.
He is survived by his mother, Aviva Helfand, his brother and sister—all residing in California—and his three children who live in Ohio.
Josh is remembered by friends and family as witty, kind, and full of heart. His sense of humor brought laughter to many, and he had a gift for making those around him feel welcome and cared for. Whether helping someone with IT issues, sharing a good laugh, or engaging in spirited conversations, Josh was always ready to lend a hand to brighten the room.
Friends recalled the joy of spending Yom Tov at the family home, where Josh’s humor and warmth left lasting memories. Others shared how deeply he was loved by his family—especially his nieces and nephew, for whom his presence and care will be long remembered.
“Josh had a heart of gold,” one close friend said. “He was always smiling, kind, and will surely be missed.”
The levaya took place on Tuesday at Home of Peace Cemetery in Los Angeles, where he was laid to rest. His family is sitting shiva in Long Beach, California.
