Hundreds packed into The Shul of the Nation’s Capital at the Chabad-Lubavitch Center in Washington, DC, for the celebration of Purim, organized by Shliach Rabbi Levi Shemtov.
Participants spanned the communal spectrum, with Members of Congress, diplomats, Administration and Congressional staffers, international visitors, young professionals and even graduate students.
A special team was brought in to prepare a huge sushi buffet. After serving over 2500 pieces of sushi, one of the organizers asked the chef for more. “Tell the rabbi I don’t even have one grain of rice left!”, was his reply.
Everyone entered their names into a raffle for fabulous prizes and the festive spirit was reinforced by shluchos Malka Phillips and Yehudis Levin, who organized the event with shlucha Mrs. Nechama Shemtov.
With lively music and lots of top grade “l’chaim”, this celebration has become an annual highlight of Purim in Washington, DC, with tons of people pouring in until midnight from other events around the city.
Celebrations of Purim with megillah readings were also organized at The White House and The US Capitol, with the help of Rabbi Shua and Esti Hecht.
A team of bochurim from the Lubavitch Yeshiva in Baltimore, MD – Mendy Schapiro, Mendy Toubul, and Berl Dubinsky – was in full force on the men’s side, and they spend the next day assisting Rabbi Shemtov with multiple megillah readings and Mivtza Purim at the Embassy of Israel, the World Bank and Sunrise Assisted Living.
