A meaningful and uplifting Sukkos gathering took place this week at Rikers Island, attended by over 250 inmates and their family members. The event, filled with music, inspiration, and Yom Tov spirit, brought together participants from across the correctional complex to celebrate the holiday in a true atmosphere of joy and unity.
Throughout the day, each facility was brought out to the sukkah to make the blessings on the lulav and esrog and to fulfill the mitzvah of leishev basukkah. For many, it was a special opportunity to reconnect with Jewish tradition and the mitzvos of Sukkos in a warm and respectful environment.
Popular magician, Eliyahu Joseph, along with other entertainers, delighted the crowd with a lively performance — making cards float, pulling endless scarves from his hat, and even guessing volunteers’ thoughts with quick humor and charm. His act drew smiles and laughter from all in attendance.
A delicious, festive meal was served, and everyone enjoyed generous portions of food and drink. The musical highlight of the afternoon was provided by the Avigdor Zeitlin orchestra, who played energetic tunes throughout the program. Before long, participants and staff were on their feet dancing and singing together.
Between songs, words of inspiration about the meaning of Sukkos were shared, and Psalms were recited with heartfelt sincerity. A brief moment of silence followed in reflection and unity.
In a deeply moving part of the program, the Torah was read, and an infant baby was given a mishebeirach inside the Rikers facility. Both his parents were there, with tears in their eyes. This was a rare and emotional moment that left a strong impression on everyone present.
As part of the celebration, individual hakafos (dancing with the Torah) were held in honor of the Yom Tov, ahead of Simchas Torah. Each participant took a turn holding and dancing with the Torah, creating a powerful and personal moment of connection.
The event was coordinated by Rabbi Zalman and Shmuly Tevel, whose dedication made the program possible. A special thank you to Rabbi Kastel and the Lubavitch Youth Organization. A big thank you to Rabbi Yoily Weiser for your strong and unwavering support; to Yehonasan Hackner for your technical support. Special thank you to Rabbi Levi Liberow. Thank you to the dedicated Eliyahu Joseph and Captain Faust for entertaining the crowd; to Avigdor Zeitlin, Zalman Niggun, and Avi Bernstein for their musical talent; and to Esther Rochel Meyers and all the volunteers for their tireless work behind the scenes.
Thank you to the Rikers Correctional team and its chaplains Kretzmer-Seed, Hecht and Simring for their cooperation and assistance in facilitating the program.
The Rikers Sukkos event once again demonstrated the power of community and the ability to bring Yom Tov warmth and light into every corner — even behind walls.
