The OU Kosher certification agency has released a notice advising that the popular Jelly Belly candy produced in some of their factories will no longer be labeled Kosher due to changes in the production process.
“Jelly Belly has informed the Orthodox Union that, due to changes in one of their factories, Jelly Belly products produced in that location will soon no longer be kosher. There is no change in the Jelly Belly formulation, but because of production changes, other non-kosher products will be produced on shared equipment,” the OU wrote in a statement.
As a result, all Jelly Belly products sold outside of North America will soon appear in packaging without an OU symbol.
Some limited production Jelly Belly items (mostly seasonal items) in North America will also lose their OU symbol.
All bulk Jelly Belly jelly beans sold in North America will continue to be produced under OU’s supervision, and most retail-sized varieties that North American consumers see in stores will remain certified as well, they said.
Consumers are encouraged to check for the OU symbol on all Jelly Belly packaging before purchasing the products.

Jelly Belly uses confectioners glaze which is an insect extraction, therefore educated kosher consumers never ate it.
It’s either kosher and therefore has a kosher certification, or not OK, I mean OU, kosher.
The Minchas Yitzchok (Rav Yitzchok Weiss OBM, Av Beis Din of Badatz Eidah Hachareidis) disagreed, and ruled that Confectioners Glaze is Kosher.
Does this apply to all jelly beans or do u know of certain brands that do not use it ?
Confectioners glaze is a derivative of bug excretement. Therefore many rabbis working in kashrus will say to avoid it as it’s a Shayla. Therefore those wanting to be mehudar would not eat things with that ingredient. It is in Mike and Mike’s, and shiney double bubble as well … (Confectioners glaze is what makes it shine)
