Southern comfort and soul food are the latest addition to the trending kosher food scene in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights as a new fried chicken restaurant opened on Kingston Avenue this week.
Izzy’s Fried Chicken is the latest venture from Izzy Eidelman, owner of the renowned popular barbeque joint Izzy’s Smokehouse and Mexican spot Izzy’s Taqueria, both located in the neighborhood.
Located a block off Eastern Parkway, the family-friendly restaurant seats 65 and boasts colorful murals, an open kitchen concept and a pleasant outdoor area.
Dishes include fried chicken and waffles, chicken on house-made biscuits, fried chicken with blackberry jam, and fish and grits with red snapper, grilled seasonal vegetables, and grits made of white corn, fish stock red pepper purée.
“Our restaurants are all about people getting together, enjoying great food and having fun with family, or enjoying a beer with friends, in a fun atmosphere,” Eidelman told COLlive.
Eidelman says that his restaurants aim to show that kosher food does not have to be secondary to non-Kosher food, and customers at the restaurant’s first tasting event agreed.
“I enjoyed my first taste of Izzy’s Fried Chicken, and I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything quite like it,” Sean Ludwig, founder of the barbecue website NYC BBQ, which reviews kosher and non-kosher restaurants, told COLlive. “The flavors are similar to traditional Southern comfort staples but with a kosher twist, with the fried pickles, peach crumble, and chicken and waffles being my personal favorites.”
“Izzy’s has won plenty of awards, and we have the same goal here: we happen to be a kosher restaurant, striving to be the best we can be,” Eidelman says.
The secret to his brand’s success, Eidelman believes, is “to never be content with where we are,” he says. “We are constantly working to evolve, and working hard to make Crown Heights a great food destination.”
