Israeli Minister of Education Yoav Kisch paid his first visit to the Rebbe’s Ohel at the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York, late on Sunday night.
Kisch, a member of the Likud party who is married with three children and lives in Ramat Gan, first wrote a personal note “pan” at the Ohel Chabad-Lubavitch Center.
He then lit a candle and entered the Rebbe’s Ohel, joined by a delegation from his office, led by Professor Ami Moyal, President of Afeka Tel Aviv Academic College of Engineering and a senior figure in Israel’s education system.
Welcoming them were businesswoman Chagit Sofiev-Leviev, President of the Ohr Avner USA institutions, and her husband Gavriel Sofiev, Vice President of the World Congress of Bukharian Jews, as well as Rabbi Zalman Zvulonov and Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Wolowik of the Bukharian Jewish community.
Minister Kisch spent an extended time in prayer at the holy gravesite, considered the most visited Jewish site in the United States. He mentioned the Israeli hostages held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza in need of salvation and the security forces who risk their lives to protect the people and the holy land.
Kisch, a former military and commercial pilot, is the grandson of Frederick Kisch, the highest-ranking Jewish officer in the British Army, and a descendant of Rabbi Shmuel Salant, who served as the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem in the 19th century.
“This is a very moving place,” Kisch said following the visit to the Ohel. “May the merit of the Rebbe be for the entire Jewish nation, to many generations ahead, and bring security and peace.”
