More than a year after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, the IDF said Thursday it had killed the man it considers to have been the chief architect of that cross-border massacre – raising questions about the future of the war and of the militant group itself, which has faced blow after blow in recent months.
Video footage released by the Israel Defense Forces shows tank fire targeting a building where Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar had been barricaded, authorities said on Friday.
Sinwar, the architect of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, was inside a building in Gaza when a tank opened fire, the IDF said. He was killed Thursday by Israeli forces.
Israel vowed to kill the terror leader after the attack that he masterminded killed 1,200 people in Israeli communities, and several hundred others were taken hostage by Hamas terrorist fighters.
The death of Sinwar could pose a rare opportunity to strike a ceasefire, US officials say – with Israel having killed several other top Hamas commanders including Ismail Haniyeh, the group’s former political leader, as well as leaders of militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Hamas and Hezbollah are both part of an axis of militant groups backed by Iran.
The IDF has released video footage showing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar on the night before the October 7 attack, retreating with his family into an underground tunnel network beneath his home in Khan Younis. The video shows him transporting equipment and supplies for an extended stay underground.
According to the IDF, this footage was retrieved from Gaza several months ago.
