A heartbreaking story has emerged from Tel Zion, where a respected sofer and his family are struggling to rebuild their lives after a sudden and devastating fire destroyed their home and left their young son severely injured.
The father, Avraham Shachar, has dedicated his life to writing sifrei kodesh with quiet dignity. But several months ago, an electric scooter battery suddenly exploded inside the family’s apartment, triggering a fire that spread within seconds.
The blaze consumed everything – furniture, clothing, sefarim, family possessions – leaving the home unrecognizable. But the greatest tragedy was the severe burns suffered by the Shachar family’s young son, who is now undergoing long, painful rehabilitation that doctors say will continue for years.
Since the incident, Avraham has been unable to continue his work as a sofer. His days are spent in hospitals and treatment centers, while his other children struggle with trauma and fear following the fire.
“We lost our home in minutes,” Avraham shared. “But the hardest part is watching my son suffer. No child should ever go through what he is going through.”
With Pesach approaching, the family’s situation has become even more painful. While Jewish homes around the world are preparing for the holiday, the Shachar family is living in a small temporary apartment, with no home to clean, no kitchen to prepare, and no space to host a Yom Tov meal.
Community members who learned of the tragedy describe the situation as “heartbreaking” and “urgent,” noting that the family faces overwhelming medical expenses, emotional trauma, and the daunting task of rebuilding a home from nothing.
A fund has been established to help the Shachar family cover medical treatments, rehabilitation, and the reconstruction of their destroyed home.
