Despite the curfew and the incessant sirens, hundreds of Jews in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv happily celebrated Pesach and the Seder nights.
Due to Russia’s war against Ukraine, Kyiv’s Chief Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch began the Pesach preparations immediately after Purim.
Coordinated by Shluchim Rabbi Ariel and Cherry Markovitch, thousands of people received matzah, wine, chicken, meat and other food and medicine products.
Those who could come to the Chabad House themselves picked up the items themselves. For those who could not, special vehicles of the community brought them the ‘bags of Pesach’.
Some of the ones who stopped by were Jewish soldiers in the Ukraine military who picked up Matzah and other necessities for the Seders they planned to hold in their base.
Hours before Pesach, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal called Chief Rabbi Yonatan Markovitch to congratulate him and all the Jews of Ukraine.
He thanked Rabbi Markovitch and his staff for his great humanitarian aid to Ukraine and wished true freedom to all Ukrainian residents On behalf of the entire Government of Ukraine.

One of them was Victor, a Holocaust survivor. He was honored with opening the door for Eliyahu Hanavi and reciting “Shfoch Chamoscho” about G-d’s revenge on those who hate the Jews.
Victor burst out in tears, making many participants emotional as well as they face uncertainty during the war.
