Hi Boys and Girls! Welcome back to “History’s Heroes” where we learn about our favorite Jewish Heroes and craft, paint, or experiment along the way!
As we close our History’s Heroes series, we thank you for being part of this meaningful experience, uncovering the stories of those who shaped our world and expressing their impact through the lens of your own creativity. May we be inspired to be heroes in our own time!
Highlight: Rambam
Rambam, lived a life of purpose and precision. Forced to flee from Spain at age 13, he journeyed through Morocco before settling in Egypt—yet despite constant upheaval, he remained deeply productive, writing Pirush L’Mishnayos, Mishneh Torah, and many works that brought clarity to Jewish life. A brilliant physician, he cared for Jews and non-Jews alike, giving of himself fully. He even turned down an offer to serve as King Richard the Lionhearted’s doctor, choosing instead to stay with his community. The Rambam didn’t just write Halacha—he lived it. He uniquely detailed the obligation to share Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach with non-Jews and actively did so through his medical and spiritual care. His vision, as stated in Hilchos Melachim, was of a world where all people would serve G-d together—an ideal he worked toward in both word and action.
To honor the Rambam’s role not only as a Torah giant but also as a world-renowned doctor, we’ll dive into a hands-on art project that reflects his wisdom in healing. We’ll begin by learning a special technique to create a marbled paint background—using balloons to apply and swirl layers of color. This will result in a dynamic, abstract design that represents both creativity and complexity. Then, we’ll turn our attention to building a stethoscope out of clay. As we work, we’ll think about how the Rambam gave of himself fully to help others, Jew and non-Jew alike, and how he used every moment of his life to bring clarity, healing, and light into the world. The finished piece will be more than a painting; it will be an acknowledgement to one of our greatest thinkers, healers, and Role Models.
