Over 500 people, including business and political leaders, tourists and many Shluchim and their families joined together this Chanukah to celebrate The Boston Menorah, the first ever to stand in Copley Square.
The Boston Menorah, a project of the Jewish center led by Rabbi Mayer Zarchi, is amongst the largest in the world. It stands at 32 feet tall and 25 feet wide. Talk of the Menorah was heard throughout the Boston area, as thousands of photographs were taken and news outlets from across the Commonwealth reported on it.
For the lighting of the fifth candle, an event co-sponsored with over 12 Chabad centers in Boston, Copley Square saw its largest gathering of Jews who came to participate in the historic “Chanukah in Copley Square – A Celebration of Light, Unity, and Liberty.”
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, addressed all assembled, lit the shamash and congratulated Rabbi Mayer Zarchi for creating the magnificent project.
Consul General of Israel to New England, Shai Bazak, delivered Chanukah greetings on behalf of Israel. This was Governor Patrick’s first public Menorah lighting in his two-term leadership.
Participants enjoyed a world class musical presentation by The Berklee Music Ensemble and cantor Moshe Zilberstein, hot latkes and sufganiyot, and children’s art projects.
