As we approached Rosh Chodesh Kislev celebrating the Rebbe’s recovery, Bais Rivkah dedicated a day to focus on “V’nishmartem Me’od lenafshoseichem.”
Consequently, last week Thursday the students of Bais Rivkah High School experienced a most meaningful and magnificent event – a Health Fair with learning and hands-on activities about spiritual, physical, and emotional health. Many professionals provided insight and shared their extensive knowledge in areas affecting our health.
The theme of the day was the saying “moach sholet al halev” – the mind rules the heart. The essential ingredient necessary to making proper decisions in life is to have a healthy mind ruling over a healthy heart.
Crown Heights Dr. Eli Rosen provided Bais Rivkah girls the privilege of hearing him speak about the benefits of spiritual, physical, and emotional health. He also provided answers to applicable and most commonly asked questions. Ms. Chaya Faigie Jundef, a noted Mechaneches and principal of a girls high school, shared the heart wrenching and heroic account of her challenge and eventual recovery from an eating disorder. She evoked encouragement and inspiration with her journey of recovery from the most dire situation. As the girls left the shul, they were each handed customized schedules for the day and lip balms. They then concentrated on learning the day’s Limudei Kodesh sessions.
Following a healthy mega salad bar lunch, there was a whir of constant activity, exhibits, and educational workshops. Many professionals displayed their areas of expertise and provided hands-on activities at the Health Fair.
The workshops covered various areas of health. Gitty Chein began the afternoon by explaining how our bodies are the Bais Hamikdash for our neshamos, and eating whole foods make us more wholesome people. Mrs. Sarah Chana Silberstien presented a workshop on herbs and homeopathy, which was followed by a zumba workshop led by Sarah Gold. Shainy Edelman taught about healthy and nutritious alternatives to commonly eaten unhealthy foods. Additionally, the students attended a pertinent and practical workshop about the ways to respond to stress in our daily lives.
Excitement pulsed through the walls of the small lunchroom, which was transformed into an organized arena of booths. The exhibits included stations such as reflexology, aromatherapy, life guarding, emotional coding, first aid, juicing, skincare, imagine better by the JBFCS, and crime prevention by an NYPD officer.
“We were greatly impressed by the precision with which every detail of the entire day was thought about, cared for, and carried out,” a student said. “The Health Fair helped us discover and dissect every dimension of health: physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional, and the components of each. Thank you to our administration and the twelfth grade G.O. organizers for granting us this wonderful opportunity.”
I loved all the natural stuff. The Herbs and Aromatherapy most of all!
To the 12th graders that worked so hard- yasher koach! And thank you to Bais Rivkah High School- my daughter is really enjoying her first year there.

It seems the most obvious of all was left out: exercise. The Rambam in his Halachic work Mishnah Torah clearly writes that, “he rule is that he should engage his body and exert himself in a sweat-producing task each morning…They have given another principle with regard to physical well-being: As long as one exercises, exerts himself greatly, does not eat to the point of satiation and has loose bowels, he will not suffer sickness and he will grow in strength. [This applies] even if he eats harmful foods. [Conversely,] whoever is idle and does not exercise, or does not move… Read more »
Thank you Sarah Gold for showing us that exercise can be so much fun!

You are the best Sarah! I love your classes! You have such great energy and great creativity!
This will not put pressure on the girls, it gives them insight and information on how to avoid the pitfalls, and where to get help if they need it
All done in a fun way, how wonderful!
This was a great idea, and very well done!
The girls were presented with lots of information, and resources for more should they need it
It was done in a fun way – not pressured
thank you Bais Rivkah for providing such a rounded education for our girls, not just booklearning
would love to hear recording
The health fair presented a balanced approach
The goal was Awareness
The students heard from a Doctor , professional certified therapists from JBFCS, certified health coach, nutritionist
In addition to the talk about herbal remedies. Aromatherapy was featured aa a booth at tbe fair, there was no workshop recommending it.
The students walked away from the day with the realization that spiritual health emotional and physical health are all connected.

BS”D how about a shout out, ya sh’koach to Doc Rosen for taking time from his busy schedule to help others-as always
Poor kinderlach sounds like too much unproven information {aromatherapy, homeopathy, herbal remedies, etc.} I certainly hope that they were given information from registered nutritionists and dieticians as well. These new age ideas can be fun or pleasant but are often useless or even harmful medically. There are NO standards for herbs, vitamins and supplements and no correlation between what a label says and what is actually used by a body. More useful that self proclaimed experts and practitioners would be a lecture or class on how to distinguish between anecdotal claims and scientifically tested information and how to analyze information… Read more »

Zumba was definitely my highlight! So much fun dancing. Thank you Sarah!
The brains and force behind the day! Kol Hakavod!!!!
Then we wonder why we have so many eating disorders! Stop forcing kids to eat what you want them to eat! Let them learn to make healthy choices. These kids are smart enough to know that soda makes you gain weight, and that salad is healthy. Next thing you will tell them that anything over size 2 is unhealthy. Girls do poorly with such pressure.
