Scorching temperatures are in the forecast for the tristate region this week. Summer will kick off with a heat wave, according to the New York Weather Authority.
The hottest temperatures of the season are expected on Wednesday and Thursday.
“The heat turns up big time and it looks like it’s going to hang in there, too,” New York Weather Authority’s Mike Woods said.
The forecast calls for a high temperature of 95 degrees and humidity in New York City on Wednesday, the first day of summer.
Thursday’s high could hit 98 degrees with continued humidity.
Expect heat index values to be around 100-105 degrees in the interior regions of New Jersey, Connecticut and the NYC metro region.
Friday will cool down a bit but will likely still hit 90 or more.
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory dozens of counties in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Dr. Robert Glatter of Lenox Hill Hospital advises people to drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excess caffeine and products with high amounts of sugar. He said that sports drinks that contain electrolytes such as sodium and potassium with small amounts of glucose may help to combat dehydration.
Hot and humid weather can cause illness, even death. The NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene has tips on preventing heat illness.
