I want to offer my thanks to the entire Crown Heights community, as well as the guests over Yom Tov for their help and honesty in a recent situation.
A few weeks ago, it came to my family’s attention that someone found a dollar from the Rebbe and was sharing a picture of it in order to find the owner.
The name on the dollar was my great-aunt.
At first, we were just confused as to how it had gotten lost. The next day however, a woman contacted us with two such dollars which she had received as change from a store on Kingston Avenue.
It was then that we realized that something was wrong. We looked into the matter and discovered that my great uncle had a large number of Rebbe dollars stolen from him by his non-Jewish health aides.
The dollars had the name of Sema Pesha bas Malka Lan or Tzvi Zev ben Menyeh Hakohen Lan or just Tzvi. Most of them have a Hebrew date on them and a few have an English date in cursive writing.
The dollars had been spent at various stores on Kingston Avenue but we had no way of tracing them. I put out word on social media for people to keep an eye out for these dollars and to please return them to us if found.
Within 36 hours, 12 of the dollars were recovered and every day more people were coming forward with dollars to return.
I am overwhelmed by the care and concern of the community in this matter. Thanks to those who sought me out in order to return the dollars; we recovered over 30 of them!
I am so grateful for everyone’s assistance in this matter and am certain that people will continue to look out for these dollars. They may be received as change or found in store cash registers. Thanks again to those who brought this matter to our attention and helped recover these dollars!
A special thank you to CM Schapiro, Batsheva Strassberg, Hila Liani, Shoshi Frishman, Olga Tverskaya, Itzik Benabou, Yossi Gershovitz, Rochi Wagner, Shira Nesenoff, Faygie Schwei, Devoiry Spielman, Chaya Dray, Moshe Ofen, Josh Lipkind, Dov Ber Joseph and others who prefer to remain anonymous for performing the mitzvah of hashovas aveida.
My family is forever grateful.
Should you or your family member come across one of the lost dollars, please reach out to me via e-mail, [email protected].
The beauty of our community
All dollars will be returned to original owner.
Thanks for asking!
Those so called health aides are nothing more than opportunists. Some are here illigali and they grab what they can get because of the low wages they are paid. The Agency they work for takes a cut from they pay. Many don’t care about the people they work for and try to do a little as possible. The aides that work in Old Age Homes and Hospitals are not much better. It’s a big shame that the old and the infirm are left at the mercy of such people. How about starting a new organization tht will train and employ… Read more »
for what? $150 dollars?
Shouldn’t there be a “conclusion” for them? Who were they?

Yes, please show Hakoros Hatov to the Rebbe: what are you going to do with those priceless dollars?
Name the health aide here so if he/she is working for any other family they can be made aware. Inform the agency & go to the police.
The worst part is that the elderly and ill are at the mercy of those lowlifes who are supposed to ‘care’ for them. I’ve been to many old age homes and the majority of these ‘aides’ are people you wouldn’t want to run into in a dark alley at night.
Beautiful — so happy for you, and will continue looking for your dollars.
MI CEAMCHO ISRAEL
Any one who finds a Rebbe Dollar would go out their way to return it. But not everyone shows such Hakoras Hatoiv.
