Harvard President Claudine Gay will resign Tuesday afternoon, bringing an end to the shortest presidency in the University’s history, according to a person with knowledge of the decision, the Harvard Crimson reported.
University Provost Alan M. Garber ’76 will serve as Harvard’s interim president during a search for Gay’s permanent successor, the Harvard Corporation — the University’s highest governing body — announced in an email on Tuesday.
Gay’s resignation — just six months and two days into the presidency — comes amid growing allegations of plagiarism and lasting doubts over her ability to respond to antisemitism on campus after her disastrous congressional testimony on Dec. 5. She has been heavily criticized for refusing to tell the congressional hearing that calling for the genocide of Jews was against Harvard policy.
Gay is expected to announce her decision to step down to Harvard affiliates in an email later today. The Corporation is also expected to make a statement about the decision.
The announcement comes three weeks after the Corporation announced unanimous support for Gay after “extensive deliberations” following the congressional hearing.
On Chanukah, Gay attended a Menorah lighting ceremony at Harvard, where Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi of Harvard Chabad delivered a passionate speech criticizing the university’s stance on antisemitism.
Speaking in front of President Gay, Rabbi Zarchi emphasized the difficulties faced by Jewish students, citing a climate of fear and security concerns, especially after hosting a footage screening of the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel that drew criticism.
Rabbi Zarchi disclosed a disheartening fact at the event: Harvard’s demand that he remove the menorah at night due to fears of vandalism, despite its religious and historical significance.
“You know what happens to the menorah? After everyone leaves the Yard, we’re gonna pack it up. We have to hide it somewhere,” Rabbi Zarchi said. Harvard “would not allow us to leave the menorah here overnight, because there’s fear that it’ll be vandalized.”
This removal symbolized a lack of acceptance or safety for Jewish symbols on campus. He called for a transformative shift, advocating for a campus where such symbols can be openly displayed without fear of reprisal.
That she was given the option to resign. She should have been fired weeks ago
ITS ALL IN THE CONTEXT!
HER REFUSAL TO RESIGN TILL NOW HAD THAT ANTI SEMITE OBAMA FINGERPRINTS ALL OVER IT.
MAGA AGAIN NOW!
VOTE TRUMP 2024
H’ rules the world. She didn’t step down for not handling antisemitism but she didn’t know that a bigger humiliation was waiting for her. Cheater😄😄
Not sure if this will solve the anti-Semitism issue in Harvard? The new President might be worse
The top governing body, the Harvard Corporation, had found nothing problematic with Gay’s response at the Congressional hearing. Plus their predominant source of revenue comes from Middle Eastern sources. So how can it be expected for there to be any true change for the better. The problem runs much deeper then Claudine Gay I have to sadly say.
Her having to ‘resign’ gives a message to the world.
Her resignation will not cure anything. She is a symptom of the whole general malaise and problem of antiSemitic tolerance, not the cause. Want to get real change? Get rid of the whole Harvard Corporation which puts up with this hatred and woke politics.
But NY times and the other garbage articles say plagiarism. Whatever, at least it’s done.
BTW she will still hold a job there. What an example for students! Plagiarism is ok apparently.
. . . is still continuing to teach in their law school.
Good riddance! She should go down the tubes and rot in the dustbins of history together with all the anti-Semites speedily in our days! Amen!!!
Kein Yovaidu Kol Oivecha Hashem!
How many of us is googling what plagiarism means
English needs improvement 😉
Meh
Very good news !!!
couldn’t agree more
At the Chanuka lighting at Harvard, Rabbi Zarchi had the strength of character to invite Ms Gay.
He said it the way it should be said while Ms Gay had nothing to say!
EMES endures and sheker always falls away.
Chabad Harvard / Rabbi Zarchi will continue to thrive
and people like Gay become the dustbin of history.
Moshiach Now
As Gay fell on the sword of a million dollar year faculty position the rest of Harvard sighed a breath of relief and continued business as usual.
Look at her history. It doesn’t seem as though she added any academic value to the institution in all the years she’s been on payroll.
