Shira Nesenoff, a young woman living in Crown Heights, made a hachlata last Yud Alef Nissan to give out 200 Shabbos candles before the Rebbe‘s yartzeit on Gimmel Tammuz.
She told her brother, Adam Nesenoff, about this decision. He offered to sponsor all the ‘neshek’ candle kits. “It was a big hachlata, but I felt that to bring Moshiach, one has to do something big,” she said.
In the first week, preceding Yud Alef Nissan, over 100 candles were distributed. Hearing about the instant success, Adam encouraged his sister to double the number.
After giving out 400 candles not long after, the new hachlata became 600 candles leading up to Gimmel Tammuz 5777 – this coming Tuesday.
Every week, Shira goes with a group to Union Square in Manhattan and carries around Neshek kits in her bag wherever she goes. She has given out candles all over Crown Heights as well.
To help her reach the goal, Shira Nesenoff enlisted friends to hand out candles, among them Fraida Glassner, Nili Navot, Sammi Merenfeld, Tal Portal, Risa Mond, Chava Hinsey, Chana Shakedy, Chava Dunn, Tamar Chalaf, Chana Simcha Hillel, and Baila Kalenderova.
“Every Jew has their portion in bringing Moshiach closer,” said Shira Nesenoff. “As Gimmel Tammuz approaches, we must use all our kochos that the Rebbe has given us, all our passions and talents and bring light into the world. May this year Gimmel Tammuz be with the Rebbe in Yerushalayim.”
The Rebbe must be very proud. Keep up your amazing work!
