Today marks the fortieth Yahrzeit of Hatomim Avrohom Eliezer Goldman. On the 17th Sivan in 1977, Avremi was brutally murdered as he was using a public payphone down the block from his Yeshiva, Oholei Torah on Troy Avenue.
He had a friend he knew from his Friday Mivtzoim route whose wife had just given birth to a baby girl, and Avremi had spoken to him about the importance of giving their new daughter a Jewish name. He was calling his friend to hear the name they had chosen so he could give the name the following day during Krias HaTorah at the Rebbe’s Minyan.
But Hashem had other plans. Tragically, the Rebbe ended up attending his Levayah instead.
The Rebbe could be seen with a pained look of resolve as scores of people flocked to the funeral of the young innocent Bochur. For pictures from the Levayah, click here.
As we reported previously, in honor of his 40th Yahrzeit, Avremi’s family and friends sponsored the release of a new Farbrengen. Held just two weeks after his passing, the 12 Tammuz Farbrengen focused on the theme of Jewish education and a special emphasis on summer camps, something that Avremi was particularly passionate about. In fact, the Keren Avrohom Eliezer Camp Fund was established in his name for this reason.
