This past Pesach, a fire ripped through Aviva’s home, completely destroying her apartment and consuming all of her belongings and furniture, leaving her with just the clothes she was wearing.
Aviva is an elderly woman living on her own in Crown Heights.
The fire occurred on Motzei Shabbos of Yom Tov, when Aviva left her apartment at 1650 President Street to attend the Yom Tov meal. She returned to her apartment to retrieve something, only to discover the apartment was engulfed in flames.
Please open up your hearts to help Aviva replace her furniture, clothing and belongings!
She will additionally need money to pay for housing until her apartment is fixed.
Someone should contact the red cross with her. Red cross pays for housing in hotels i believe until her apt is made livable again, and will give her a new bed and some clothing. It is available for those driven from their apts by fire. Please have someone look into it with her. I know because the red cross helped me when my apt became unlivable
In actuality just in case anyone ever needs, anyone who is in a fire should call 877-733 2767 the general Red Cross number for NYC.. They will put you in a hotel as close to your community as possible for 2-4 days and after assessing the damage give a voucher for food, clothing etc. Then the case worker if it is needed can put you up in temporary housing for a more extended period of time though HPD
Someone who called the Red Cross said they would only give $90 a night for 3 nights . So it is NOT a solution and dont let that deter you from a donation that must be given.
