An elderly woman was left with nothing after a fast-moving fire engulfed her apartment in Crown Heights on Yom Tov.
The woman had left her apartment at 1650 President Street at about 8:00 PM on Motzei Shabbos to attend the Yom Tov meal. She returned to her apartment to retrieve something, only to discover the apartment was engulfed in flames.
She quickly alerted the building’s other residents, shouting fire and raising the alarm.
“It was a terribly frightening and chaotic scene, since many of the fathers were in Shul davening Maariv at the time, and there were families with children trying to get out of the building,” a neighbor told COLlive.
Residents evacuated via the fire escapes, while some were forced to go up to the roof, who were later assisted by the fire department.
Firefighters soon put out the fire, leaving the woman’s apartment completely destroyed.
The apartment above hers, which is empty, also sustained damage, however, most of the residents were able to return home that evening.
Does she need financial assistance? Is there a link to donate?
was thinking the same – please post
A fund is in the process of being set up and will be posted here shortly.
It sounds like situation was that this dear woman ended up saving people’s lives there in the building, baruch Hashem!!!
After first leaving her home to go out motzaei Shabbos, she went back to retrieve something and discovered the fire — and started screaming to the neighbors, sounding the fire alarm, etc.!
So not only did she lose everything, but she ended up becoming an impromptu heroine, too!
We as a community MUST help her!!!!
It’s known that after a fire comes bracha. Meanwhile how can we help?
You helped save people without taking any credit
It might be a bigger mitzvah for insurance agents who work on getting people to buy life insurance to first encourage people to buy fire insurance. Unfortunately it happens too often that people are left with nothing after a fire, having insurance would at least relieve the situation without having to beg for donations.
Did none of the neighbors hear the deafening alarm of her smoke detector?? Or does this building not have smoke detectors?? Either option surprises me.
