COLlive Magazine has released its Kislev 5786 / Issue 36 edition, a robust 78-page Chanukah issue filled with reporting, profiles, archival material, inspiration, and practical holiday content.
The cover story, “Make Berlin Lubavitch,” offers an inside look at Berlin’s remarkable Jewish resurgence under the leadership of Head Shliach and Chief Rabbi Yehuda Teichtel. Through on-the-ground reporting, readers follow Rabbi Teichtel as he moves between high-level government meetings, bustling Jewish educational institutions, and security-intensive travel across the city. The feature culminates with the planned 20th annual Menorah lighting at the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of Jewish triumph over darkness that has become one of the most iconic Chanukah images in the world.
In another profile, “The Unlikely Social Media Star,” readers meet Miriam Ezagui, the Brooklyn labor-and-delivery nurse whose thoughtful, relatable videos have made her one of the most influential Jewish voices on TikTok and Instagram. The article traces her early life, her entry into baby-wearing communities, her viral Holocaust education videos, and her role advocating for Jewish visibility on digital platforms — including a closed-door meeting with TikTok executives to address antisemitism.
“A Glimpse into Lubavitch of Old ” introduces the newly translated memoirs of Reb Pinchas Dov Goldenshteyn (Pinye Ber), a colorful chossid of the Tzemach Tzedek. Published in English, the memoir vividly describes Lubavitch, its Rebbeim, and shtetl life. The translator recounts their two-decade journey to recover, annotate, and publish the long-forgotten manuscript, a significant addition to Chabad historical literature.
The issue also includes “Behind the Counter,” an interview with Avrum Simche Klein, a Satmar chossid who owns Klein’s grocery in Crown Heights. He shares what he noticed about Yiddish and key differences between how Lubavitchers shop verses others.
The “Chinuch Matters” section offers guidance for parents and educators navigating contemporary classroom challenges. Children and families will find Kids Korner activities by Sari Kopitnikoff, a hands-on History’s Heroes parsha activity, and “The Candle That Waited,” a Chanukah story by Asharon Baltazar.
The culinary section presents new Chanukah recipes by Sruly Meyer, ranging from olive-oil inspired dishes to modern takes on classic holiday favorites.
A playful humor column, “How to Set Up a Menorah,” by Mordechai Schmutter, adds levity to the holiday season.
A JEM Gallery revisits the Rebbe’s Chanukah rally of 5737, offering rare photographs and snippets of history.
The issue includes a letter from the Rebbe underscoring the principle of maalin bakodesh — always increasing in matters of holiness — and applying the message of the Chanukah candles to everyday life throughout the year.
