The Los Angeles Jewish community came together in powerful fashion for “L.A. CHAI,” a landmark concert organized by Chabad of the Valley that seamlessly blended world-class Jewish music with celebrating the life-changing work of the Friendship Circle and commemorating the 10th yahrtzeit of Rabbi Joshua B. Gordon obm.
Held at the iconic Saban Theatre and produced by Jonathan Herzog, Rabbi Gordon’s son-in-law, together with Rabbi Mayer Greene—who also served as the evening’s dynamic emcee—in collaboration with LG Enterprises and Aizen Productions, the event achieved a level of scale, polish, and spirit rarely seen on the Los Angeles Jewish concert stage.
The night was headlined by two of Jewish music’s biggest stars: Avraham Fried and Mordechai Shapiro. Fried—who notably performed at Rabbi Gordon’s wedding as a child prodigy—delivered soulful renditions of his classic hits, while Shapiro electrified the audience, bringing the crowd to its feet with his signature high-energy performance.
In a touching moment, Shapiro shared that he had recently begun a daily study of the Rambam. Completely unaware at the time of the concert’s tribute, he discovered during the evening that the online lessons he had been following were taught by Rabbi Joshua B. Gordon. “I had been learning every day with Rabbi Gordon without even knowing it,” Shapiro told the audience, a revelation that deepened his connection to the evening and its purpose.
Rising talent also shone, including Dovid Pearlman, whose impressive vocal range captivated the audience. Acclaimed group 8th Day debuted their new song, “Hinei Lo Yonum,” a powerful anthem that resonated deeply in light of current events.
Beyond the music, the heart of the evening remained firmly centered on the mission of the Friendship Circle. Rabbi Michy Rav-Noy, Executive Director of Friendship Circle of Los Angeles, addressed the audience on behalf of the region’s chapters. In an inspiring message, he underscored the organization’s vital role in providing social and emotional support to children with special needs and their families—reinforcing the “seamless circle of friendship” at the core of its mission.
Throughout the evening, the enduring legacy of Rabbi Joshua B. Gordon was deeply felt. As the visionary leader of Chabad of the Valley, his impact continues to resonate worldwide, with his online Torah classes still inspiring millions. Marking a decade since his passing, “L.A. CHAI” stood as a powerful testament to a legacy that continues to live on.
“Rarely does Los Angeles get to see a concert event of this magnitude,” noted one attendee. “To experience this level of talent on a single stage—while honoring Rabbi Gordon and supporting the special needs community—made for an unforgettable night.”
