For One Chabad Rabbi – The High Holidays Is a Walk in the Park!
One of the most well-known parables mentioned in Chabad philosophy is that of the “King in the Field.” The first Rebbe of Chabad, the Alter Rebbe describes the tightening of the bond between G‑d and the Jewish people in the month of Elul with this parable that explores the special opportunities available to each and everyone to easily access the Almighty.
To help bring this lesson home for the Long Island Jewish community, Rabbi Anchelle Perl , leader at Chabad Mineola, took a walk in the park to elaborate on some of the deeper meanings of the High Holidays.
“Remember on Rosh Hashanah eve to cut the apple horizontally across the middle of the apple not vertically,” explains Rabbi Perl. “By slicing the apple horizontally, you reveal the ten green dots that surround the center star-like shape.”
Jewish mysticism explains that these ten dots symbolize the 10 commandments. We therefore dip the apple into the honey, asking Hashem to bless us with a year sweetened by the performance of many mitzvot and acts of goodness and kindness to our fellow mankind.
