As we ring in this new year, consider making tzedakah a part of your daily life. Picture this: You’re in shul. Tzedakah collectors are making their rounds. They ask you for a dollar – but you’ve already donated a dollar – to a Chabad house. You feel confident that your money has gone to support communities and Jewish institutions on the front lines – and, better yet, you did it all online!
Quick, automatic, and easy, DollarDaily.org streamlines generosity, making it simpler than ever to fulfill this endlessly important mitzvah, all while giving Jews worldwide the resources their communities need to thrive.
Since its creation just last year, Dollar Daily has already gained hundreds of new subscribers, and with their help, currently gives over four hundred dollars to another Chabad house every single day. Each of these generous individuals pledge a small sum – just a dollar a day – to support Chabad shluchim around the world. A single dollar may not be substantial in and of itself, but Dollar Daily’s subscribers have raised an impressive $100,000, all in the span of a single year.
For Chabad shluchim, many of whom have to run an entire community on a shoestring budget, just a couple extra dollars can be the difference between progress and peril. With the extra few dollars shluchim (who already make such big sacrifices in the name of shlichus) will not have to choose between new winter coats for their children or a lively, uplifting Shabbos event – and yes, that is a real-world example.
The founder of DollarDaily.org – Yosef Shidler – is a successful businessman in his own right. He runs a successful photography business with his wife Sarah, is the editor of the engaging, educational, and inspirational children’s book series, Amazing Miracle Stories for Kids, and is an active member in Lakewood’s Chabad community.
“I know so many Shluchim, stranded in the middle of nowhere, who are struggling for food and funds to clothe their children,” says Shidler. “Some Chabad houses may hold a successful fundraiser once or twice a year, but there’s always a point when they’re strapped for funds.”
It was this recognized struggle that inspired DollarDaily.org. The $385 annual charge ($1.05 a day) or $32.25 monthly charge ($1.06 a day) is given directly to the Shluchim on the donor’s behalf. The remaining funds are used to cover processing and operational fees, which total around $20 a year. Any and all surplus, if it exists at all, is also given directly to Shluchim. Additionally, Yad Lashliach – who handles the funds – will occasionally send extra money (when it’s available) when the situation calls for it.
Subscribers enjoy full transparency during the process. The full list of Chabad centers receiving funds is publicly posted here, at https://dollardaily.org/calendar.php.
Shlucha Rochel Katz, who works at the Aleph Institute, supporting prisoners and military personnel, knows firsthand the impact this money can have. “As a fellow Shlucha, this cause really spoke to me. I know there are times that feel challenging, and receiving a gift like this would mean a lot to many Shluchim.”
For most Jews, Chabad houses have become something you can rely on. No matter where in the world they visit, vacation, work, or settle down, Chabad is always there, improving access to kosher food, minyanim, and mikvaos.
One dollar might not seem like much, but its impact is huge. If 5000 people agree to donate a dollar a day, $5000 will be available for the next Chabad house in need of funds. Our service makes tzedakah a breeze, but, in truth, Dollar Daily is about much more than that. Chabad houses help unite Jews the world over, all while spreading the mission of Ahavas Yisrael. For just a dollar a day, anyone can take part in this world-changing mitzvah. Start your new year the right way.
