The European Parliament has voted in favor of a new regulation which will see kosher meat labeled as “meat from slaughter without stunning” in a move which Jewish bodies fear is “discriminatory.”
The decision was made today as part of a proposal for a regulation on the provision of food information to consumers.
Around 70 per cent of an animal killed by shechita is consumed by the non-kosher market and Henry Grunwald QC, chairman of Shechita UK, the lobby organisation which defends religious slaughter, said the decision will have a serious impact on the kosher meat industry.
He said: “This ill-conceived amendment discriminates against kosher food and will have a significant impact on the kosher meat industry across Europe.
“The Jewish community is fully supportive of providing consumers with information about the origins of their food and we urged MEPs that if they wanted to label meat and meat products, labels should include those killed by electrocution, shooting, gassing or clubbing as well as the many millions of animals that are mis-stunned during the stunning process.
“To pick on one method is suspicious, troubling and discriminatory.”
The truth is we used to stun animals before shechita when offering them on the altar. (Mishnah Sota 9:10.) Maybe it is time to bring it back?
Jews always support left wing parties, parties that advocate for nanny state policies when it comes to everything else, but when it comes to issues related to Jews they are up in arm “what business does the gov’t have telling us how to what we do?” You can’t support the nanny state when you like it but not when you don’t; you either support it or you don’t.
You obviously didn’t read the article properly:
“Around 70 per cent of an animal killed by shechita is consumed by the non-kosher market and Henry Grunwald QC, chairman of Shechita UK, the lobby organisation which defends religious slaughter, said the decision will have a serious impact on the kosher meat industry.”
If it stops here, it’s not so bad.
Who else eats Kosher meat besides Jews.
The question is, where will this lead to ?.
one method of killing cows, is to crack its skull open, & smash its brain with a stick.
No doubt the new law is discriminatory. I agree with the quote in the article which states that ALL meat should be labeled with the origin and how it was slaughtered. NOT just kosher meat. Maybe we should all consider becoming vegetarians and let the animals live in peace??
To “stun” they fire a captive bolt into the brain of the animal [the bolt then returns to the gun]. This is supposed to cause instant uncontousness but many times it fails to stun and the animal has to be shot again – and they have the nerve to call shechita cruel to animals.
incidently, chickens and other fowl are supposed to be electricuted, but are often sent to the plucking and cutting lines whilst still alive as the charge does not kill them!!
time to get out
using a stun gun to shock the animal b$ killing it
what is stunning?
