Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order Wednesday barring city officials from taking any action that could “discriminate” against Israel or entities tied to it — a move aimed squarely at preventing municipal support for the BDS movement, JTA reported.
The directive places immediate pressure on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, known for being anti-Israel, who will have to either rescind the order upon taking office or break with the longstanding tradition of extending all prior executive orders on day one.
Adams said the order was intended to make clear that “BDS has no place in our city.”
A second order directs the NYPD to consider additional limits on protests near houses of worship, following a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside an Upper East Side synagogue that drew widespread condemnation.
Adams has increasingly showcased his support for Israel in recent months, signing the orders while traveling for a mayors’ summit on combating antisemitism, JTA reported. Adams has warned publicly about the city’s future under Mamdani, who has pledged to oppose investments in Israel Bonds and has taken sharply critical stances toward Israel’s government.
Mamdani said Thursday that he will review all of Adams’ late-term orders once in office, the report said.
