Chabad of Chattanooga in Tennessee, led by Rabbi Shaul and Rosie Perlstein experienced a memorable Pesach celebration this year, thanks to the generosity of philanthropist Joseph Lipsey III.
The event was anchored by a powerful yet simple idea: making the Seder accessible to all—for just 18 cents.
The symbolic charge of 18 cents (the numerical value of “Chai,” meaning life in Hebrew) wasn’t just a clever price point. “Joe Lipsey envisioned a Passover gathering where cost would never be a barrier, and where every Jew, regardless of means or background, could come together to celebrate freedom, tradition, and unity,” said Rabbi Perlstein.
And that vision came to life.
More than 200 participants attended the Chattanooga Seder, making it one of the most well-attended and impactful community Seders in recent memory. Families, singles, students, and seniors—everyone felt welcome. The energy in the room was electric with singing, storytelling, and delicious food, all arranged with thoughtfulness and dignity, the rabbi noted.
Lipsey said his sponsorship was more than just about covering the costs. “I wanted to create a Seder that was accessible to everyone, reflecting the essence of community and the spirit of Passover,” said Lipsey. “This is more than just a meal. It’s about coming together, celebrating our identity, and making sure no one is left out.”
His support for Jewish causes both in Chattanooga and beyond has earned him widespread respect. With this Seder, he once again demonstrated his deep commitment to ensuring that every Jew can feel connected, supported, and proud.
“Mr. Lipsey’s vision has transformed the landscape of Judaism in Chattanooga,” said Rabbi Perlstein. “He didn’t just sponsor a Seder—he created a sense of belonging and pride that will resonate for a long time to come and a model that others can follow.”
Thanks to Joe Lipsey, the 18-cent Seder was not just affordable—it was priceless.
