A state of emergency was declared at Ben Gurion International Airport in the early hours of Monday morning, after a technical fault was discovered in an El Al flight headed for the United States.
Flight LY027 from Tel Aviv to Newark is carrying 259 passengers on a Boeing 777 model aircraft.
Following take-off and during the flight a technical fault was discovered in the wheels of the plane and the flight crew decided to return to Israel.
A state of emergency was declared and 60 ambulances and 20 fire trucks arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport ahead of the emergency landing.
The aircraft is currently hovering above the Mediterranean Sea in order to get rid of excess petrol ahead of the emergency landing.
The plane is expected to land when the sun begins to rise, at approximately 5:30am.

A source at Ben Gurion Airport tells COLlive that the plane is scheduled to land in approximately 8 minutes.
Yeshiva World News is reporting that the flight is packed with Americans returning to the U.S. after spending Lag BaOmer in Meron. They have also confirmed that there are multiple Hatzolah members from the New York area aboard the plane as well.
