The center of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, looks like it will escape the flooding that has hit some suburbs and provinces to its north, Reuters reports.
But evacuation orders are still issued each day in outer districts and many displaced residents face weeks of hardship.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said Monday 562 people had died in the flooding since late July and that 22 of Thailand’s 77 provinces were still affected.
Chabad of Thailand, recognized for its humanitarian efforts offered to Jews and non-Jews alike, has begun a campaign to provide immediate and much-needed nutrition in areas swollen by high tides in the Gulf of Thailand.
Shluchim Rabbi Nechamya Wilhelm and Rabbi Chaim Eliezer Ashkenazi have literally rolled up their sleeves (and pants) to reach residents stuck in these locations and give them food and drink.
“They were very happy to see us,” Rabbi Wilhelm told COLlive, “and were very thankful for the assistance.”
