Today, Chabad of Krakow with support from Jews across the globe are launching a critical campaign to reopen the gates of prayer.
Just a short while ago, a minority faction within the Krakow Jewish community locked the doors to the historic Izaak synagogue. This building, built in 1644, withstood the evils of Nazism and the corruption of socialism to be a fixture of Krakow minyanim.
The effects of the Holocaust and virulent socialist nationalism are still reeling their ugly head in Europe. Rabbi Gurary, knowing no difference between language, age or gender, has helped to reconnect, revitalize, and renew Krakow’s historic population center and cultural breadth.
In the years since Rabbi Gurary’s arrival, he has relentlessly endeavored to continue the mission of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and rekindle the warmth and vibrancy of Krakow. His ongoing efforts have shown a marked increase in openness, community inclusion and overall attendance, from local community members to thousands of tourists and travelers. This very connection is showcased by Krakow Parishioners davening in front of the locked synagogue gate; that no Jew is alone, that we are all one and stronger together.
Like food and shelter, a Jew must have a place to daven. However, recent actions by less than scrupulous individuals have attempted to steal away this most basic need. They cut off the electricity, they cut off the water, and they locked the gates, and they installed a small, masked – mercenary force at the door. With valuable religious items still locked inside, an elder Chossid and Holocaust survivor lamented how he had seen such actions in the past, but never by fellow Jews.
As the Rebbe has said ‘Lechatchila Ariber.’ Now is the time to push forward, overcome this obstacle and grow. Chabad of Krakow has found a new space to support the only daily minyan in the city and to continue their essential work.
Right now, Chabad of Krakow and Jews across the world have joined in this critical campaign to raise $133,000 the amount needed for a two-year lease.
