Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday that he will run as an independent for New York City mayor, following his dramatic loss in the Democratic primary to socialist and anti-Israel candidate Zohran Mamdani.
In a short video posted online, Cuomo framed the race as a head-to-head with Mamdani, ignoring the incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent and the Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa.
Cuomo’s entry will make the race a 4-way bid, making many people worried that it will only bolster Mamdani’s chances of winning and implementing his policy and agenda. Many readers of COLlive.com have called on him to step out of the race.
According to Politico, the new 94-second campaign clip of Cuomo engaging with New Yorkers was done in a style reminiscent of Mamdani’s viral street videos.
“The general election is in November, and I’m in it to win it,” Cuomo said. “My opponent offers slick slogans, but no real solutions.”
The 67-year-old, criticized for a low-energy primary campaign, vowed to “run a very different kind of campaign” focused on affordability, public safety, and voter outreach. “We need lower rents, safer streets, and affordable child care,” he said.
Cuomo also apologized to supporters for letting them down and promised to meet voters “on the streets” with a new team and strategy.

Everyone needs to consolidate behind Cuomo. Eric Adams has been a great friend to the Crown Heights Community and boldly defended Israel, but he cannot win. The numbers are not in his favor. (And no, “Trump in 2016” is NOT the same thing. Even some Left-Leaning polls in 2016 had Trump behind 3% in the popular vote. All because he didn’t want to use the Hospital ship or the Javits Center arranged by Trump.
So he forced Nursing Homes to take in Covid patients.

Cuomo and Adams are both deeply flawed candidates.
Curtis Sliwa has always defended the Jewish community. He needs our financial support to run a proper campaign. With matching funds, every $125 will = $1000. Let’s do this!

Perhaps the community needs to support Adams- not politically but in other ways, so that he will feel confident and bold to make such a great decision as to endorse Cumeo against the antisemite…
Alternatively, perhaps the antisemitic rhetoric can be brought to federal court/ another heroic Trump involvement to save New York(?), enabling them to stop him from receiving any political power, which he doesn’t deserve, especially in a state home to millions of Jews.
Do not assume the outcome of the general election. Only 13% of eligible voters voted according to cuomo.
I dont support cuomo but i do agree the general election results may be very different.
Also only democrats voted.
Obviously democrats were not enthused by madani or cuomo as so few votef
