NY Governor Andrew Cuomo says that Shuls can possibly be open for Shavuos, but many rules will likely be put into place.
At a press conference Sunday on the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, Cuomo said that there is good news for the state on the declining numbers of cases in the region.
During the press conference, in response to a question about Jews being allowed to attend Shul on Shavuos, “a very important Jewish holiday,” Cuomo said Shuls can possibly be open.
Cuomo responded that religious ceremonies with gatherings of up to 15 people, with social distancing and “safeguards,” will likely be permitted.
Cuomo added that more detailed guidance will be released on Monday or Tuesday.
These rules will be put in place for all Memorial Day gatherings as well, he said.

halachic guidelines of pikuach nefesh are much higher than cuomo’s protocol…we will follow the guidelines set for us by the rabbonim and our community doctors in conjunction with them
Community doctors and the gedalia society have already said that if it was up to them schools and shuls would be open already
Where did they say this? I have been reading all their updates and didn’t see anything of the sort!
i read the same updates that you did and did not get that at all…there is a large percentage of crown heights who do not have antibodies and a large percentage of crown heights that have not yet been infected with corona…..there are so many unknowns with this virus…those are the facts that we do know….and we have experienced tremendous loss from this virus in our community…we need to make sure that we don’t experience more loss before we reopen our shuls
Not for NYC. Sounds great for Shevuos, but NOT gonna happen.
What about 770
Not more than 15 people
the rest just eat Cheesecake home
How are we letting this guy believe that he is the baal habos over us?
No one is forcing you to go to Shul. If you don’t feel comfortable to go. Just sit home and daven there.
But to say that he is being a ‘Bala habos’ over us for letting us daven in a Shul is a bit ridiculous. All he is trying to do is offer THE PPL WHO WANT TO to be able to go to Shul. End of story.
Since when does a goy tell a yid when he can and can’t go to shul? And since when does a yid take orders from a goy? I stopped going when the rabbonim said no, not when the gov or mayor said no. Well, rabbonim said to follow law. Go look at the CDC policy. 15 people, even more if outdoors and social distancing. Besides for the fact that none of this is actually a law, but guidelines. Go to shul, this thing is over in ch. The metzius is that in our community BH there are almost 0 new… Read more »
He was just tested for the virus!!! Where are his mask & gloves??
Never going to have no more than 15 at a time if 770 opens. A porch minyan on my block had people visiting from 5-6 blockss away, more than 15 people just on the 1 porch, no distancing at all. People are irresponsible and can’t be trusted.
Any age limit for Shuls?
Its for UPSTATE NY only, not for nyc
THIS IS ONLY FOR UPSTATE, not de Blasio’s velt.
Look how far we’ve come. They will let people go to target, go to Costco, and we are ok with it, but to let people go to shul? Chalila! Tape off squares in Shuls that are six feet apart and let that many people in. Or have everyone wear useless face masks. There are ways they could have found solutions that don’t have an arbitrary number in them of how many people can be there. Or are you going to treat the space in 770 the same as the space in Empire Shteeble? When are we going to remember the… Read more »
Although it is true that for some politicians this is almost a way to show their distaste for anything religious, it is important to realize that there are currently no facilities which allow ppl to sit indoors for a long period of time, even stores are not the same thing as sitting in a place for a service. the fact is, that from all evidence compiled so far, indoor gatherings even socially distanced ones is where the virus thrives. and if you listen to Cuomo he actually does not sound like he has animosity toward the shulls, he just keeps… Read more »
How all of us have been brainwashed. It’s a free country at least it used to be.
When we talk about small businesses opening most people agree and say it’s time to open! But when we talk about shuls opening everyone cries “pikuach nefesh!!!!”
Find me even one yid who values his business more than going to shul. You wont find any! Parnassah is unique and the regular rules of pikuach nefesh do not apply… “b’nafsho yovi lachmo” -unesane tokef
Who gave Cuomo the right to these kinds of decisions? Religious freedom is protected by the constitution.
While it may be unwise to open and while people do need to take as many precautions as possible, we can’t allow public officials to have this control over our lives.
If he wanted to get Rabonim together, community leaders and ask them to tell there communities not to go to Shul, that would be responsible and wouldn’t infringe on our rights.
But for him to suddenly become the Corona posek is a disgrace.
Notice how no one is wearing a mask. I hope no one coughed or sneezed the whole time.
