NY City Council Member Laurie Cumbo has issued a first-time grant to the Crown Heights Community under the Elie Wiesel Holocaust Survivors Initiative.
The Elie Wiesel Holocaust Initiative is a $2.5 million program established by the City Council to provide Holocaust survivors living at or below the federal poverty line with a wide range of services, including preventive health care, medical appointment transportation, case management support and home delivered meals to help maintain and improve their quality of life.
Councilmember Cumbo, whose district includes Crown Heights, as well as parts of Bedford Stuyvesant and other nearby communities, has been a champion of the Survivors Initiative, trying to ensure that Survivors, who went through so much in their younger years, should be able to enjoy their 80s and 90s in as much comfort as possible.
For her work on this and other projects for the benefit of the community, Council Member Cumbo will be recognized by the Jewish Community Council at their annual Legislative Brunch on May 21 at the Jewish Children’s Museum.
By way of illustration, Rabbi Eli Cohen, of Crown Heights Jewish Community Council told of one Crown Heights family whose Survivor parent needed extra care in order to be home for the recent Yom Tov, rather than in a hospital. The program paid for the care and the parent spent the last month of her life at home rather than in an institution.
Family members whose Survivor parents are not yet enrolled should call the Community Council at (718) 771-9000 ext 7710 and the Council staff will attempt to accommodate their needs.

Today’s generation is far removed from it and don’t necessarily know survivors. Traditional Holocaust teaching may even be received negatively or ch”v sour their connection to Judaism (if give a very primary place in Jewish knowledge). By contrast, stories of heroism and light within darkness give them the feel and knowledge of the Holocaust R”L in a way that’s vibrant and fills them… Read more »
