A recent article on COLlive.com about homemade spelt and egg-free challah that was being sold in Crown Heights as a fundraiser for The Beis Medrash stirred discussion after people questioned its need for a hechsher.
While commentators praised Chanel Lipskier for taking initiative to support her husband Rabbi Motty Lipskier‘s evening Torah learning center for men, some inquired about the need for a kosher supervision on the products.
The latter felt that it would create a new, uninvited trend in frum communities where people won’t bother to check who is behind a homemade product, or would encourage the precedent of trusting an individual person to be loyal to kashrus when financials are a factor.
In a conversation with COLlive on Thursday, Mrs. Lipskier said she actually agreed with the comments that suggested that this might become a fad and cause problems.
“After reading the comments I realized how valid they were,” she says. “Do we want to teach our children to have to judge each person that sells homemade goods and ‘decide’ if we can trust their standards? It is a lot simpler and safer if we teach them the black and white symbols to look out for.”
Mrs. Lipsker said she contacted CHK, the kosher supervision of the Crown Heights Beis Din for a full review and has received their certification. “Rabbi Berel Levertov went through all the ingredients, the baking process, and many other details and then gave us the hechsher,” she said.
Another development is that the challahs are now being kneaded and baked in the kitchen of the United Lubavitcher Yeshiva boys school on Crown Street.
“My kitchen was too small of a work-space and having only one oven for all the challah made baking them a very long process,” she explained.
So when Yossi Langsam of the Yeshiva graciously allowed Lipskier to use the kitchen on Friday mornings, she gratefully accepted and it has made production much more efficient.
So if you happen to be awake at 5:30 AM Friday morning, you are welcome to join Chanel Lipskier and professional baker and cake designer Miriam Szokovski and other volunteers at the Lubavitcher Yeshiva kitchen as they perform this unusual mitzvah.
The challahs are sold at Apple Drugs on Kingston Avenue. 100% of the proceeds from sales go directly to The Beis Medrash. To make a customized order please email [email protected].
This is so beautiful!
to #30 be careful toasting leftover challas with cheese – if you had them on your fleishig shabbos table they may have got fleishig
there is more than one way to give tzedakah
volunteering weekly from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. is QUITE a gift to give…. i don’t think TBM could find someone (frum) to do what she does for any money
Mrs. Lipskier, you did it again! You set your mind to do something incredible, and now this is just one factor on the way to incredibility 🙂
good for her that she gets up at 5:30 am to help mrs. lipskier!
and miriam makes the most gorgeous and delicious baked goods! (not like most cookies you find at simchas that are hard as a rock but look beautiful) check it out: http://cakesbymiriam.wordpress.com/
my family got two of them last week and after shabbos we froze the leftovers (after slicing it)- it is now a week later and i just toasted it with some cheeze, DELICIOUS! AND DOESN’T TASTE IN THE LEAST BIT OLD!
Your Challos are fantasic and so is your Hashkofa and integrity! Kol Hakovod, and may your worthy endeavour go from strength to strength!
THANK YOU yOSSI lANGSAM. yOU ARE THE BEST. aND THANK YOU cHANNEL. yOU ARE GREAT.
GO MIRIAM SZOKOVSKI!! #1 BAKER
Very impressed with Mrs Lipskiers response and immediate action. A lot to learn from. Kol Hakovod!
In the pic there is a hand holding up the bag but nobody in the pic 🙂
A commercial eatery that sells products that could have non-kosher ingredients NEEDS a hechsher. That’s why all such processed food and stores have a hechsher. We do NOT rely on chezkas kashrus when their is a financial gain involved!
Pizza shops are included!
Challah and bread have MANY ingredients that could be problematic, plus the oven used can create a problem (if it is a milchig oven). A hechsher is REQUIRED.
I too thank this challeh baker for doing the right thing!!
Let the pizza shop and other eateries learn from this!!!
Great job chanel!!!!!!!!
Go Lubavitcher Yeshiva!!
this is so wonderful , chanel. i certainly anticipate tasting your challahs and supporting your cause. every aspect about this initiative sends out very positive vibes to everyone, just as you do. keep it up!

Yossi Langsam is just the best, he is always out there to help another person and make things easier for all.
Hats off to Yossi!!!!
B”H I have a challah pre heksher, is it ok to eat, the article makes no mention if Rabbi Levertov asked her to change any thing in order to gain the heksher
Mrs. lipsker should be involved in chinuch!!! she has her head on straight
#’s 1,6 and 10
Chanel and Reb Motty are a great example of People living in crown heights, making a difference, being positive role models and setting a wonderful example to all…
Hashem Should Bless them ! BIG TIME!
Shulchon Aruch says specifically that a shomar shabbos yid has a cheskas kashrus. It also says in these types of inyonim when you walk into a shuk you can buy (referring to pickles and not challah that has bishul yisroel, kemach yoshon, issues). If you want to teach your kids, teach them to follow shulchon aruch and not the next fad. Any other way easily leads to a slippery slope where you nebach have people (beit shemmesh, etc) that can’t deffrenciate between what a shulchon aruch yid does and what kaanim that go against shulchon aruch do.
There has been (or still are) commercial eateries which operate without hashgocha – other than “hashgocha elyona” or “hashgacha protis”. It is time we learn from this that it is NOT acceptable.
I say “Kol hakovod” for doing the right thing and keeping proper kashrus standards!!!!
Great job
I didn’t know about this product or the controversy (I live in Jerusalem), but I am impressed by every aspect of the story, from the recipe, to the cause it supports, to Rebbetzin Lipskier’s response. I hope to pick some of these challos up next time I’m in the neighborhood.
chanel, wondering if this is mrs. wuensch’s recipe passed along to your momma. if so, it is the BEST!! way to go.
You are someone who really knows how to get things done RIGHT!
