On Sunday Beis Iyar – 23 April was a milestone moment for Jewish life in Cape Town, South Africa when three members of the community made a Siyum, celebrating their year-long journey in studying the entire Mishne Torah of the Rambam.
Kent Karro, Stephen Paul and Mark Gawronsky joined the daily classes given on Zoom through the Johannesburg Torah Institute, which started in July 2020. Each day of the week, another rabbi taught, including Cape Town Rabbis Kalman Green, Pini Hecht and Oshy Deren.
At the Siyum, held at Chabad of the West Coast, Karro made the Siyum on behalf of all of the participants. David Sevel, who joined the cycle in October 2021, began the new cycle of daily study.
Rabbi Levi Silman, a popular daily Rambam teacher through his Whatsapp group messages and podcasts, encouraged everyone to join the new cycle of learning a chapter a day, or the daily Mitzvah and shared his own experience of how much he gains from it.
Guests and Rabonim from across Cape Town joined in the celebration, including Dayan Mordechai Liebenberg, who has undertaken to join the new cycle himself of studying one chapter of Rambam every day.
