On Tuesday night, over 30 Jewish students attended a comedy event which was hosted by Chabad of Liverpool Universities in England.
The star of the evening was British Jewish comedian and actor David Schneider, who has starred in a variety of films and studied Yiddish Drama.
Schneider’s focus for the night was primarily on Jewish culture and how he relates to it in his highly humorous way.
Rabbi Shmuli and Tzivia Brown transformed their living room into a relaxed entertainment hub, with a buffet filled with refreshments, a sound system and a cosy seating area for the audience. After the reception, the show was underway.
Schneider instantly struck a bond with the audience and was ruthless when it came to singling people out. Throughout the show he constantly interrogated a student who was in hysterics in the front row, repeatedly asking her “what did he say?” The only answers he got from the girl were more laughs.
He kept confiscating a bowl of crisps from another front rower, while a medic who looked exhausted was a prime target. Schneider hadn’t even told one of his own jokes yet.
Highlights of the show included a fabulous skit depicting Schneider as the least regular attendee of a synagogue; a nervous guy who puts on his prayer shawl before he puts his skull cap on, reads his prayer book upside down and through the entire skit just can’t get it right. The show was wrapped up with Schneider singing a Yiddish rendition of Frank Sinatra’s ‘New York.’
After the show, the audience hung around, had more refreshments and heard Schneider’s thoughts about the show. He said, “Doing Jewish shows especially for the Jewish students whom are the future of British Jewry makes me feel very proud to be Jewish, I felt great fondness for many people in the audience, you could even say most of them. It was weird to do it in the living room, but it was big enough, so I think it worked. It was a real laugh.”
Alex Dover, one of the audience members, said, “I’ve never been picked on by a comedian before but I think I gave as good as I got. Great night overall
though.”
Rabbi Brown, the host for the evening said, “It was amazing to see how the one and only David Schneider intertwined religion and comedy in such a unique way. The students were rolling with laughter and enjoyed being in the presence of an extremely successful Jewish comedian.”
