As the new school year approaches, Cheder Menachem of Long Island (formerly Cheder at the Ohel) stands proud as an institution where warmth, Chassidishkeit, and academic excellence come together to create an exceptional chinuch experience.
B”H, this past year was another successful one—thanks in large part to the dedicated principal, Rabbi Shneur Zalman Berkowitz, who, over the past three years, has elevated the Cheder to new heights, helping it flourish both in spirit and structure.
The school is also running with strong organization, thanks to the dedication of its administrator, Rabbi Moishe Koncepolski, who singlehandedly oversees the finances and works closely with each family to accommodate their specific circumstances.
As Cheder Menachem continues to grow, it is pleased to announce the expansion of its Hanhala. Joining the leadership is Rabbi Moshe Halperin, who brings over 18 years of experience in Chinuch. He will serve as Co-Principal, working alongside Rabbi Berkowitz to oversee the daily operations of the school and support its continued development.
Founded in 5756 (1996) by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shemtov, A”H, the Cheder was established on the principle of Chinuch al Taharas Hakodesh, following the Rebbe’s directives.
What began as a modest school has grown into a thriving moisad, with a nearly 30-year legacy of nurturing Talmidim into confident, Chassidishe leaders.
Located on a spacious campus in Valley Stream, Long Island—just 10 minutes from the Ohel—the school features a full-size gym, shul, auditorium/ballroom, cafeteria, and student lounge. Its proximity to a 97-acre state park enhances the natural environment in which students can flourish.
At Cheder Menachem, every child is known and cared for. Smaller class sizes allow for personalized attention, helping each Talmid shine. From Pre-1A through 8th grade, students grow together in a warm, Chassidishe environment that feels like one big family.

I had Rabbi Halperin as a teacher, and all I can say is that they definitely made a great catch. He’s truly a kind and patient teacher that ensures all material is understood. I would 100% rank him as one of my 5 favorite teachers.
A major yasher koach to Rabbi Berkowitz and Moshe Koncepolski for their tremendous dedication to the cheder, which many b’nai shluchim in Long Island benefit from. We are truly indebted to you and your entire staff. Looking forward to a successful year ahead. Rabbi Tuvia Teldon
