The mission of Cheder at the Ohel, near the Rebbe’s resting place in Cambria Heights, Queens, is to offer quality and Chassidish education to Lubavitch boys.
Trading and the stock exchange isn’t really on their list.
But thanks to Simi Jacobson, CEO of The J. Group, the school has just received a generous gift of 100,000 shares of Gianni New York, LLC, a gourmet ice cream and Italian ice company.
Gianni, currently a privately held company, is also part of The J. Group. Its CEO Rivie Schwebel and CFO Dov Fishoff are taking the company public in an estimated 6 months.
The current IPO price per share, which has been constantly shifting upward, based on the company valuation, is one dollar, making the value of the gift at this time $100,000.
The gift was given thanks to Jacobson’s friendship with Rabbi Levi Zarchi, Director of Development of the Cheder.
“One of the main reasons Gianni and I are heavily involved in the Cheder, is because we have seen many Jewish institutions that refuse to accept children whose parents cannot afford the tuition,” Jacobson said.
“Cheder at the Ohel accepts many children whose parents cannot afford the full tuition, disbursing generous scholarships, because children should not be a victim of their parent’s financial circumstances; it is a place where children from wealthy homes and from poverty stricken homes are treated equally.
“No one is denied the opportunity to have a quality education that will give them the tools they need to succeed in life, especially self esteem and the confidence to accomplish.”
