Chaveirim serving Crown Heights has joined the New York State Chaveirim Coalition in backing Governor Kathy Hochul’s plan to reduce auto insurance premiums across New York.
In a March 11 letter to state leaders, the coalition warned that rising insurance costs are creating a major burden for volunteer organizations that rely on vehicles to provide emergency assistance to motorists.
In a joint letter sent today, the New York State Chaveirim Coalition expressed strong support for a proposal by Kathy Hochul aimed at lowering auto insurance premiums for drivers statewide. The letter was addressed to Carl E. Heastie and Andrea Stewart-Cousins.
The coalition represents volunteer Chaveirim organizations across New York, which together operate more than 100 service vehicles that assist stranded motorists, respond to emergency situations, and provide roadside help around the clock.
According to the letter, rising insurance costs have become a growing burden for them. Higher premiums mean more of their limited funds must go toward insurance instead of the vital services they provide.
Chaveirim members also say they regularly hear from the drivers they assist about the struggle to keep up with insurance payments, even though for many New Yorkers owning a car is essential for getting to work, school, and other daily errands.
In the letter, Chaveirim thanked Governor Hochul for recognizing the issue and taking steps to address rising costs, calling the effort both timely and important for motorists throughout New York.
The letter was signed by Chaveirim leaders representing Queens and Great Neck, the Five Towns and Far Rockaway, Crown Heights, Seagate, Brooklyn and the Catskills, Orange County, Rockland, and Staten Island.

When was the last time you saw a car pulled over for speeding? Going through a red light (which I see happening daily on empire (Brooklyn, Kingston, and troy). Lack of enforcement causes a dangerous attitude on the road. The other option is to do what other densely populated cities do and have permit parking. Where every car needs to have a permit & visitors needs to get a… Read more »
