Charles Nassofer, a beloved fixture of the Chabad community in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, passed away on Thursday, the eve of 11 Iyar 5785.
He was 80 years old.
Nassofer, born on July 9, 1944, always stood out in the sea of black-hatter Chassidim at Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters—770 Eastern Parkway. He was lovingly known as Charlie Buttons for the wearable buttons and pins stuck to his head covering. Most of these pins were Jewish-themed, such as the Rebbe’s 10 Mitzvah campaigns (Tefillin and Shabbos), the Tzivos Hashem youth movement, Gan Israel summer camps, and even one from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
Charlie, always wearing a white shirt and overall jeans, was treated with much respect and even affection by the Rebbe. He merited to bring a smile to the Rebbe’s face many times, as evident from the hours of video footage taken at the Rebbe’s Farbrengens, Kos Shel Brachos, Dollars and davening, and Lag BaOmer parades. It is said that Charlie loved making an L shape as a hand signal for “Lubavitcher Rebbe.”
“During the Farbrengens at 770, after the Rebbe would finish a Sicha, the entire crowd would shout ‘Amen!,'” one Crown Heights resident reminisced. “And each time, just as the crowd’s ‘Amen’ would die down, Charlie would shout his own ‘Amen!’ as loud as he could, booming through the entire Shul.”
There were rare occasions, such as a farbrengen in 2010, when Charlie showed up at 770 wearing a black suit, red yarmulka, and bowtie. He told the crowd that he was invited to a wedding in Williamsburg, “so I’m wearing this costume.”
A regular at Murphy’s Shul in Crown Heights, Charlie would bring joy to many when he appeared—often uninvited but always welcomed—at Sholom Zachors, L’chaim engagement parties, and weddings in the neighborhood. He was described as bringing much joy and laughter to all.
Over the years, Charlie has been the subject of many “Picture of the Day” features on COLlive.com, showing him playing chess, handing balloons to children, and being visited. In 2010, a listing went up for auction on the shopping website eBay.com for a pair of “Charlie Buttons overalls.”
In Iyar 5771 (2011), Charlie was in the news for serving as “The Grand Marshall” at the Los Angeles Lag BaOmer Parade in California. The report said he “made his appearance in grand style, riding atop a Convertible, waving to everyone and blowing balloons for some youngsters.”
In 2012, the Humans of New York journalism project photographed Charlie, who then handed them a piece of paper with the following written on it: “Charles was hired, trained, and fired by the United States Postal Service on three separate occasions…”
In 2016, a children’s book titled “Charlie Buttons and Yossi’s Baby Brother’s Sholom Zochor” was written about him. Yaffa Leba Gottlieb wrote it, and a portion of the proceeds was given to “Charlie’s balloon fund,” which he gave out free at simches.
An indication of people’s love for him was the celebration organized in honor of his 80th birthday at 770’s main shul last year, July 25, 2024 – 19 Tammuz 5784.
During that party, people of all ages raised a L’chaim in his honor and blessed him. They presented him with a special gift—a framed photo of himself receiving a dollar from the Rebbe.
One woman wrote about him at the time: “I remember Charlie when I lived in Crown Heights. He used to take my fatherless kids and ride them on his shoulders on Simchas Torah. G-d bless that man. He has a heart that’s bigger than the world!”

Charlie’s health has declined in recent years, and COLlive reported his condition at his behest. The public was asked to say Tehilim for Tzaddik haLevi ben Masha Ruchel and visit him. One such request mentioned how Charlie would love to be gifted books and vanilla halva, but not chocolate, which he was allergic to.
He most recently was a resident of the Bedford Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Williamsburg.
He is survived by his two sisters.
The levaya will be held on Friday, passing by 770 Eastern Parkway at 11:00 AM.
Kevura at Mt Hebron, 130-04 Horace Harding Expy, Kew Gardens Hills, NY 11367. A Minyan is needed at the cemetery for all who can attend.

He is so amazing Charlie buttons!! He would walk around with forks and spoons in his front pocket! Give out candies and just made me have amazing childhood memories
Anyone know if Charlie spent any time at Penn State University in State College Pa in the late 1960’s ?? When I first moved to Crown Heights
In 1974 he seemed very familiar to me.
Pm
Someone here mentioned that he had a BA, but doesn’t mention from where
His sister says in an interview that he learned in Brooklyn Technical High School and Polytechnical College.

Yes
Charlie wasn’t just a Tzadik because it’s nice to say that about him. His literal name was Tzadik. He embodied a life of Chesed, every waking moment he was looking to help his fellow Yid. May his special Neshama have an Aliya and be מליץ for all of us.
As a kid I always looked up to charlie every time I came in from la I always waited to get a ballon from charlie the most exiting thing for me is when they brought Charlie for the lag bomer parade we will miss you Charlie
So sad to hear.
A special and iconic person.
BDE
I believe he was a shliach to make others happy and definitely a true chassid of our Rebbe in his own way. The real OG. He will definitely be missed.

there goes another legend of dor hashviei
Baruch Dayan Haemes
What a beautiful soul
Brought so much joy to children at weddings
Please post levaya info so we can honor him
When I went by The Rebbe for a blessing for wine, Charlie was before me, he held 3 cups, when The Rebbe went to pour, Charlie screamed Chochmah! Binah! Daas!, and The Rebbe poured into 3 cups! I am a eyewitness!
I was there as well to see that. Someone’s Rebbe’s wine had spilled. He told Charlie, and Charlie poured him one of the 3 cups. He told him this chochma (or it might have been bina or daas. Which sfira he said I don’t remember) clearly.)
He would grab the cups as he was about to get it, I.e he was not waiting for more the 5 seconds with the cups…. And I rember a few cups, although I don’t remeber how many… Another thing I remeber watching the blue tanyas… Was very not active, when he came by a swing.
He would take 3 cups every time he went for Kos Shel Bracha, and scream out Chochmoh Binah Daas. in 2008, he came to Orlando FL, to visit his sister who lived there, and came to visit the camp. while there, he told the story, that R’ Meir Harlig A”H – who was managing the line, would constantly tell him to only use one cup, not to take up extra time. so one time, he finally relented. he came with one cup the Rebbe smiled a made a questioning gesture, as if to say: “where are your cups”? of course,… Read more »
One more story that I witnessed! When Charlie went to the mikvah he brought his rubber duckie, and he would dive into the mikvah, screaming “ I am taking the Leap of Faith “
And everyone in the mikvah stood back a bit if they were smart…
That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard.
What a loss! Charlie was a HOLY YID, & had many brachos from the Rebbe! He attended nearly every Simcha in Crown Heights for years‐ even schlepping with his walker with great difficulty, (though he NEVER COMPAINED!) for the sole purpose of SPREADING JOY & HAPPINESS to all who met him! He was at my Chassuna in 1992, SHARING SMILES & BALLOONS, & his own personal brand of wisdom! He was ONE-OF-A-KIND, & will be SORELY MISSED! I’m certain he’s up in Gan Eden reaping the rewards of his UNIQUE SHLICHUS! May his neshama have the HIGHEST ALIYAH, & may… Read more »
He was at most Crown Heights smachos since the 70s!
What time is the lavaya?
B”DE
Please add his name to the subject line it’s clear from his name who he was
I’m still convinced Charlie was a Tzaddik Nister.
Every time I saw him, I asked him to give me a Brocha!
Boruch Dayan Haemes!
And a Merry Chanukah….
Yes. Merry Chanukah!
Please explain
Charlie spoke about Chanukah all year round. I always felt that there was something deeper to what he was saying..
He used to wish everyone a Merry Chanukah, and counted all days of the year from the first day of Chanukah (“today is the 267th day of Chanukah”)

So sad
So sad 😔
Growing up in crown heights as a kid I can’t ever remember an ounce of negativity coming from him.
My heart is broken. Charlie was a Tzaddik. A core childhood memory of mine is him give out balloons at all the simchas.❤️ Were so blessed to call him a part of in this community. I’m certain his Neshma is in Gan Eden! Charlie is going to be missed dearly.
I had the privilege of going on mivtsoyim Simchas Torah to a Jewish care home with Charlie 45 odd years ago. We danced into the patients rooms with a Sefer Torah. He brought so many smiles of real Simcha.
Bde
May he come back right away in a guf gashmi with an endless stack of balloons and his huge smile ready for the biggest Simcha of all-Moshiach NOW!
Thank you Charlie Buttons for all you have done. Your light and presence continues to shine and bring happiness
This makes me really sad. Charlie was a holy soul who just wanted everyone to be happy. You will be missed my friend.
The level of SIMCHA that he had, an any given moment was really something to learn from…
All joking aside, he had something special that influenced many that met him…
May his neshama have an Aliyah and may he be good advisor for us all
I’ll never forget you Charlie 😢.
You were a good friend to everyone including me. I hope to see you with משיח !
When he would get off the subway he would shout with pride,
“KINGSTON AVENUE!”
May we all learn from Charlie Buttons by spreading light and happiness!
From when I was a kid: “Kingston Ave. Messiah’s House!”
BD”E.
What stood out most in my childhood memories of him at 770 was his roar of a loud AMEIN at the end of each sicha from his position at the top of the bleachers by the Rebbes farbrengens. He deliberately stood right near the Rebbes sofer, Eliezer Zirkind OB”M who offered an English summarised translation of the Rebbes Sichos for those who stood near him.
A ‘Tzaddik’ who clearly was not so Nistar!
I once gave Charlie a ride and he told me that his father brought him as a child to the farbrengen of yud shvat 1950. He was there.
Brought my wife and I Joy had our engagement with his beautiful red heart balloon.
I remember there was a big blizzard and he was walking down Albany with his bags without a coat, and I said Charlie it’s freezing cold outside where’s your coat? He answered it’s in your head!
We will all miss you Charlie
He brought joy to many people
He will be missed by many
I have many great memories of him in 770 and by simchahs
Charlie was such a special man, he visited my house for years almost every Friday night before he went to the shalom zachors,he would always make a lchaim with my father and make a bracha out loud on some thing. I can still hear him loudly saying yechi as he would exit my house. His aim was to put a smile on people’s faces especially kids, giving out balloons at all simchos,He didn’t have an easy life yet he wasn’t lazy at all I remember in the bitter freezing cold he would be walking outside going to shalom zachors some being… Read more »
I remember once crossing Albany Ave and President Street and he turned to me and exclaimed “Happy 165th Day of Chanukah!!” (I don’t remember the exact days he said, but it was really the amount of days that he said since Chanukah!) He lived with the joy of Chanukah all year long!
Always blew me away how he can be at every event at same time.
This is the part where they find a box of חידושי תורה
Also pesach betzalel fleishman ah from los angeles was Niftar. Was also a tzadik who was very close w the Rebbe and made him happy.
The amount of love this community has- what a special special place! The warmth and embracing and genuine care and love and respect for all-
Really really Kahn Tziva!
Is it known that he kasher peoples kitchen at some point? And give a duch to the Rebbe?
He onced mentioned that he would walk with the Rebbe on fridays and tell him his duch about his job of kashering peoples kitchens in Manhattan.
So if anyone can add on this will be great, (I thought that if it was like he said, then people would know, because he said he walked with the Rebbe…)
I am not from CH. One Shabbos after getting engaged, I was at a Shalom Zachor, and Charlie walked in, clearly after many Lchaims. I started chatting with him and he told me that he would be at my son’s Shalom Zachor soon. (I wasn’t even married yet) Sure enough, 11 months later, there he was at our 1st son’s Shalom Zachor.
Something that hasn’t been mentioned in any of the comments was that at every single Shalom Zachor he went to. He always asked for a bencher and made a ברכה אחרונה looking inside.
I recall seeing Charlie many times whenever I visited crown heights. Very special yid. BDE.
We have been zoyche to have had such a special man in our community!! He was very particular to go “Sholom Zacharing” by every single family in Crown Heights for many years. One Friday night, I casually mentioned to him that someone that I worked with in Williamsburg had a baby boy that week. Sure enough, the next day, he told me that he went and wished them Mazal Tov from me!! His balloons at simchas were legendary! In addition to making the people at the simchas happy, he would gather the leftover food to bring to the homeless. Indeed,… Read more »
Yes a hidden Tzadik we believe!!!
I was sitting near him at a shalom zachar just after Gimel Tammuz, not sure how it came up, he mentioned that he was in touch with the city or the transit authority, he became aware that they were redoing the subway stations, and were including in the decor or the theme, something about the area of each station. He made it his mission to include something about 770 and the Rebbe at kingston. Recently when I came to 770 for the kinus hashluchim I asked him if he remembers, which he did but he told me I’m a procrastinator… Read more »
I also haven’t been in a subway now for at least a few years, but last I saw, nothing about 770, The Rebbe or משיח. Perhaps it’s just as well.
Charlie haTzaddik,
Please daven for all the singles who are awaiting their shidduchim and did not merit to have you at their lichayim. Bring joy and brochos to them from your high place above!
Back in the 1990s (when I first visited Crown Heights) Charlie had long hair in a long braid. One morning in the mikveh Charlie walked in with short hair–his braid was gone! Everyone made a fuss and asked what happened. Charlie said, “I finally had my opsherenish!”
It is so hard to believe that someone so full of life is no longer with us. I never wanted this day to come😢 we need moshiach right now!! May Tzadik ben Yisroel Eliezer halevi’s neshama have the highest aliya
He counted a whole year the days of chanukah and passed away on the day we learned the laws of chanukah in the rambam,
Also on the “25th” day of sefirah.
“Netzach sheb’netzach”
No question he was a very special holy yid, his AHAVAS YISROEL for every yid was real and from the heart. His whole life he was just making everyone happy.
“VEHOKITU VERANENU..” WITH MOSHIACH NOW!
Thank you, so aptly and beautifully said.
Does anyone know the full speech that Charlie used to repeat? I watched a few videos and tried writing a transcript but couldn’t make out all the words. Please reply if you have any corrections. “The Lubavitcher Rebbe is the Messiah of this generation, the Lubavitcher Rebbe is the Messiah of all generations. Let the word of the Messiah inform all the nations that Israel is one land, one people, one Torah. It shall not be divided by the President of the United States or politicians in Israel as is being done piece by piece by piece. There shall be… Read more »

That video of his speech is going around WhatsApp. He said it when he was making a lchaim by a farbrengan
He got a BA in criminal justice and was president of the vegetarian club there.
BD”H! In the 70s-90’s we called him just Charlie. Buttons was added later. He was given a special pair of overalls by Rabbi Riskin who used to be the Rabbi of Lincoln Square Synagogue & moved decades ago to Efrat. He was so happy with his special Lincoln Square Synagogue Shabbos overalls. Until we moved away in1990, Charlie wore only those – no coat – even when it was 0 degrees. He called Manhattan The Playground. The subway were the toy trains he played on at the playground. I think he loved being eccentric as a way of getting us… Read more »
I came to crown heights every Pesach. One of the highlights of Y’T was seeing him march and sing down Brooklyn Ave. on way to Tahalucha.
Tzadik Charlie Buttons has left us. But hopefully the Simcha and Love he embodied will remain here in our hearts and guide our lives with Joy. He was content with very little materialism and just wanted to bring Happiness to everyone around him. He had such a generosity of Spirit and Love for every Jew. We miss you and Love you Charlie!
Boruch Dayan Ho’emes
We will all miss you , with your beautiful good words
A special soul!
Loved his speech!

Charlie used to tell me how he was close with every rabbi in New York City, every shul, every community.
He was also a regular at the Carlebach Shul in Manhattan and was very close with Reb Shlomo.
I think of Charlie every time I learn the ma’amar Bosi L’Gani.
Charlie used to shout this out every time he got off the 3 train in Crown Heights. Many of the train operators would react positively to Charlie’s announcement.
Every time Charlie was asked why he hadn’t gotten married yet he would reply: “I’m waiting for the right girl to ask me.”
So interesting that his father’s name is a combination of the Baal Shem Tov and the Baal Shem Tov’s father- ahavas yisroel
Each and every comment posted here is completely true and shows us the beauty and holiness of this special Yid we called,
Charlie. And to find out that his Hebrew name was Tzadik… speaks for itself! Charlie Buttons please remind G-d to press THE BUTTON that will usher in our well deserved Messiah/Geulah.
1) don’t take yourself seriously
2) love the Rebbe . Revere him
3) love your fellow Jews
4) spread joy , share a smile , a joke .
Act the clown to make another person smile
5) give blessings . Generously .
6) you don’t have to be rich to share what you have ,
Charlie used to collect extras from Simchos and share with the poor
7) love Judaism. Love Torah . Spread that love
8) Be humble.
9) don’t kvetchy , don’t complain
10) Be iconic everyday
A neighbor of mine used to visit him often; This is a big mitzva to visit people in these homes; it really gives them chayos and extends their life
🎈
A very special person with a very special Neshama, one who brought joy for years on end to countless people. He merited to bring a smile to the Rebbe many times, and was zocheh to special kiruvim from the Rebbe many times too. Nearly every time he passed by the Rebbe, the Rebbe would give him a special wave or some type of acknowledgment.
His grandfather was Leibish Nassofer (ha-Levy)
Charlie Nassofer was a Levy.
Not only did Charlie pass away on Netzach within Netzach, but in that day’s Chitas, we see the Rashi citing Rabbi Akiva!
When reading about the simple people in the Baal Shem Tov stories, we merited to have a living example right before us. Someone who dedicated himself selflessly to bringing joy and laughter to others.
Very fond memories from when we lived in CH, including visiting our l’chaim and making a balloon ❤️ for my kallah , to being joined by him on morning subway rides where the whole carriage would hear him sing his song “Adam had a party….” (don’t recall the rest of the words..” and wishing everyone a merry xxth day of Chanukah. Brought a lot of simcha a light to many lives for sure, and will be having a big party in shamayim no doubt!!!
we want to be menachem his sisters
May his memory be a blessing.
Charlie came as a part of our Family Simchas – just showed up and added joy.
What a lesson in life. Will be sorely missed.
I hear the following story, personally from Yossi TEVEL a”h, many years ago. When the Rebbe was at Beth Israel Hospital, people would often go to the area right outside the hospital to be as close as can be to the Rebbe, at the mini park type area, right across from the hospital. One early morning right before dawn, Yossi Tevel went to that very area outside Beth Israel Hospital where he seemed to be the only Yid, there, at that crazy hour, the least likely time to ever find anyone, there, at such time. Tevel was shocked to notice… Read more »
Thanks for sharing! Merry Chanukah!
Every time there was a suicide bombing in Israel, the President said, “Make Peace! Give away a piece of land.” If there was a suicide bombing in Israel, the President would say, “Make Peace! Give a piece of land away.” What if there was a suicide bombing in America, what would the President do? That is the example that Israel should follow. Bomb them! Bomb them! Bomb them! Vedibarta Bam.
