By now, the word “Charidy” is synonymous with giving in the same way Kleenex is with tissues and Pampers is with diapers. It’s a household name and rarely does a day go by that we are not invited to give to another worthy cause. Over $800,000,000 has been contributed, and the world of Tzedakah has been dramatically altered for the better.
Now, Charidy is taking on a new challenge―to make daily giving easy and accessible, in the hopes of getting people to do more for the causes they love.
What is their inspiration, and why is the platform expanding beyond annual campaigns?
In 1990, the Rebbe addressed Nshei uBnos Chabad, tasking them as the Akeres Habayis with the privilege and responsibility of establishing Jewish homes as a place of mitzvos and positive deeds. He shared, “Primary among these activities should be tzedakah, charity. To emphasize the importance of this mitzvah, a woman should permanently affix a tzedakah pushka in the kitchen where she prepares food for her family.”
The concept is simple: “Give charity daily. When you give to those in need, you are serving as G‑d’s emissary to provide for His creations. The home is a classroom, and keeping a”pushka” (charity box) in your home—and contributing a coin to it every day—will teach you and your children the noble value of regular giving.”
Twenty-three years later, motivated by his own Chabad upbringing, Yehuda Gurwitz, founder and CEO of Charidy, decided to take tzedakah to the digital generation. “Most companies never get off the ground, because they struggle to find an early adopter community to take some risks and try something new,” Gurwitz explains. “We didn’t have that problem. Tzedaka is a natural part of Jewish life, and who better than Chabad to lead that path? It was a natural fit, Baruch Hashem.”
Today, Charidy seeks to take on this Mivtzah at full throttle with their app, transforming every location, including your phone, into a virtual tzedakah box. The app allows givers to locate their favorite mosdos, find new causes, and give in just ten seconds. With the ability to organize and plan their donations, givers can make responsible choices about how much, and when, they want to give.
As a hat-tip to their pivotal customer base, Charidy produced a short animated video, providing a virtual tour of Chabad’s vast impact in the world through its various mosdos, all of which can be accessed on the app for donation.
“The charidy app, and its goal of making daily giving to any organization in the world, easier than ever, marks a new era for us,” describes the app architect and Charidy CIO, Moshe Hecht. “To celebrate this milestone, we wanted to pay homage to our initial customers. The ‘pioneers’ of Charidy, if you will.”
The app is free. Charidy does not charge any additional fees other than standard credit card processing. If linked to a bank account, zero fees apply.
With the birth of this app, it’s never been easier to support your favorite organizations and Chabad houses―no matter where they are, Hecht says. “To collapse all barriers between us and doing the right thing. This is what it means to be a giver of tzedakah. When we act on compassion and invest our money into tzedakah, daily, we transform the world into a place of tzedek―righteousness.”
Welcome to Charidy 2019. Welcome to the future of tzedakah, again.
