For the 27th year in a row, the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Berl Lazar, lit the first Chanukah candle in Red Square in the center of Moscow.
Despite the bitter cold, thousands stood in great excitement and listened to the words of the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the meaning of the Chanukah holiday.
At the conclusion of the blessings and the lighting of the first candle, the crowd burst into joyful dance with entertainment by singer Yehuda Glantz.
Greetings were also received by the Israeli Ambassador to Russia, Gary Koren, and the heads of the government sent greetings with best wishes for Chanukah .
The entire event was broadcast by dozens of local and international media outlets and caused pirsumei nissa – reaching millions of people
