A historic public Menorah lighting took place Sunday at India Gate, the country’s most heavily guarded national monument. This marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time authorities granted permission for such an event at this sensitive location, opening the site for a Jewish celebration.
Local police cordoned off the area to accommodate the gathering. In the shadow of recent global tensions, including the attack in Bondi, Australia, Indian officials sought to amplify the Chanukah message that light ultimately triumphs over darkness, allowing the glow of the Menorah to symbolize hope and resilience.
The event was organized by Chabad of Delhi under Head Shliach Rabbi Akiva Sudry. Rabbi Chaim Grossbaum kindled the Menorah before a diverse crowd of government dignitaries, locals, tourists, and business leaders.
The ceremony also served as a tribute to Rabbi Gavriel and Rivky Holtzberg, Hy”d, continuing their legacy of spreading light and holiness throughout the region.
