The NYPD Shomrim Society joined together with Chabad of Staten Island on Friday for the fourth installation of their Safe Shabbat Initiative.
In the fourth event this summer, the NYPD Shomrim Society members gathered in solidarity with the community while they ushered in the Shabbos, to showcase their unyielding commitment to making the city a safer place to live, work, and worship.
Rabbi Mendy Katzman, Shliach in Staten Island, commenced services with a welcome and thank-you to NYPD Shomrim Society members for being present and for their day-to day efforts in keeping the streets of New York City safe.
Lee Stanton, NYPD Shomrim society board member and “Safe Shabbat” Chair, spoke about the alarming proliferation of hate crime in the city, spotlighted antisemitism, and discussed the need for every New Yorker to denounce hate in all forms.
NYPD Chief Chaplain Rabbi Dr. Alvin Kass thanked Rabbi Katzman for hosting the Society and spoke of the need for Jews to feel safe coming to shul especially now that the month of Elul is upon us.
As presentations concluded, a “Safe Shabbat” was declared, and the congregation welcomed in Shabbos with beautiful Friday night prayers.
