The annual conference of Israel’s Dayanim opened on Sunday at the Leonardo hotel in Jerusalem with rabbis and heads of rabbinical courts from around Israel.
The conference, organized by Israel’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau, was dedicated in memory of Rav Yosef Shalom Eliashiv OBM, the legendary posek who served as a dayan, ahead of his yartzeit.
Sharing personal experiences about Rav Eliashiv was his first-hand man for many years, Rabbi Yosef Efrati. He mentioned Rav Eliashiv’s way of ruling and his instructions on appointing new dayanim.
Rabbi Lau and his colleague, Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef stressed the importance of strengthening the relationship between the Chief Rabbinate the Batie Din in the Diaspora.
3 esteemed guests from abroad were Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, Head of Machom L’Dayonus and Senior Dayan of the Sydney Beth Din in Australia; Moscow’s Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt and Rabbi Eliezer Wolff, Dayan of Amsterdam.
In his remarks, Rabbi Ulman addressed a current pandemic of the conversion of children being born from non-Jewish surrogates and egg donors.
The Rabbi also discussed the topics in Gittin including the best way to appoint a Sofer, Shliach and Eidim in cases of necessity via the internet.
