The Chabad of the Beaches community in Long Beach, New York, commemorated a profound moment of unity and resilience on the 3rd of Elul, August 20, 2023.
Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Eli and Beila Goodman, and the guidance of Rabbi Shlomie and Gitel Naparstek, who recently joined the Chabad of the Beaches community, they came together to dedicate a new Torah scroll, casting a beacon of hope following the theft and vandalism of two Torah scrolls nearly two years ago.
In a poignant ceremony on the 3rd of Elul, members of the Chabad of the Beaches community joined hands with government officials, community leaders, and many participants to honor the memory of the stolen Torah scrolls.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Long Beach City Manager Ron Walsh, City Council members John Bendo, Liz Treston, Tina Posterli, and former State Senator Todd Kaminsky were present to participate in the final lettering of the new Torah, a task meticulously carried out by the master sofer and mohel, Rabbi Dovid Sousan.
This journey of healing and restoration was made possible by the boundless generosity and unwavering support of Elaine and Norm Brodsky, who recognized the profound significance of this moment. Their initiative to underwrite a new Torah scroll and find the right sofer, Rabbi Romi Brenner, under the guidance of Rabbi Yitzchok Raskin of Machon Stam, has not only mended a scar but has also strengthened the bonds of the Chabad of the Beaches community.
The event was a resounding success, with participants savoring every moment. Choni Milecki‘s dynamic presence, combined with the Korn Torah Truck, created an electric atmosphere. Soho Caterers’ culinary expertise left taste buds tingling and hearts satisfied.
The event was a testament to meticulous planning and coordination, ensuring that every aspect, from the heartfelt moments of community participation to the sumptuous buffet lunch, was executed flawlessly after a spirited and joyful dance extravaganza!
Mrs. Naparstek was overwhelmed by the large turnout and the exuberant Torah Parade, stating, “It reaffirms the strength of unity and the indomitable spirit of the Chabad of the Beaches community, showing that even in the face of darkness, their light shines brighter than ever.”
The highlight of the event was the Torah parade, which wound its way through the streets of Long Beach, including the iconic boardwalk. The sight of the Torah scroll on the boardwalk inspired cyclists, walkers, and even residents on their balconies overlooking the procession, epitomizing the unity that transcends all walks of life.
RNSP Shomrim coordinator Shulem Klein, along with his team of over 150 volunteers, together with the Long Beach Police Department led by Commissioner Ron Walsh, were honored for their role in the intense search throughout the community for the missing Torahs after the vandalism that took place 2 years ago.
Reflecting on the celebration, Rabbi Goodman remarked, “Today’s event marks a pivotal moment in the revitalization of the community’s spirit as we move forward with renewed purpose and unwavering resolve towards the future.”
